About this listen
Venice is alive with the magic and bustle of Carnevale.
A city of mysterious masks and gorgeous palaces, of riches, patricians, intellectuals and artists. And amidst it all, something new is being born: magnificent voices are soaring above the spires, astonishing costumes are being crafted, and audiences are being transported, for the first time, by the power of the Opera.
And beneath it all: espionage, organised crime, and murder.
Swordsman Richard Hughes has arrived on the banks of the Grand Canal looking for a simpler life, only to be plunged—alongside Phillip de Chambray, a remarkable woman unable to show her true self—into the thick of the murkiest, most dangerous European politics, at a moment when someone is trying to destroy the opera, and Venice itself.
Rich with authentic detail, this is the story of a complex world not so different from our own, and Christian Cameron, the modern master of historical fiction, brings real history to life in a way no other author can.

Story
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Story
A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

In the shadows of the human world, a secret society of demon hunters fights to keep humanity from the supernatural forces that threaten to tear it apart. But for Max Bentley, a rookie hunter struggling to find her place amongst her kind, the biggest threat might just be the four brooding, enigmatic members of the most elite team of hunters—all of whom seem to have taken a special, antagonistic interest in her. Never Fails to Entertain
An erudite historian with a gifted pen, Christian Cameron is THE consummate author of historical fiction in a class of few others. Yet another enjoyable read in an already impressive body of work by the author.
If you appreciate Stephen Pressfield, Conn Iggulden and Mary Renault, you’d appreciate Cameron’s library of work.

Great Friendships Create A Great Company
Such a pleasure to listen to, thank you Peter Noble! A triumph for the author Christian Cameron. This is the evolved and mature author, assured in his mastery of the long series. Wonderful characters develop within a plot that never fails to excite. Combat described with extraordinary flair and expertise. I look forward to a dozen new books to read over the next decade. Thank you, Mr. Cameron!

Fun spy novel in a cool setting
Enjoyed the cast of characters and general stumbling around trying to solve a murder, could have used some more mystery regarding the identity of the killer but all in all a good bit of swashbuckling

Great story and a nice change of pace
This was a really pleasant surprise. I’m a huge fan of Cameron’s but a mystery is something of a departure from his previous work. This was very well executed and kept me guessing and a nice change from most historical fiction which seems to all occupy the same time periods and locations. 17th century Venice is a new one for me and I very much enjoyed it. Looking forward to the sequel.

A fun mystery in 17th century Venice
A fun story, exploring politics and intrigue around the Venetian opera. Christian Cameron brings his usual depth to the characterizations and lived experiences of his characters.

Lost his touch
The book gradually dissolves into tacky / egregious feminist pandering, it's a very awkward and out of place breaking of the 4th wall.
At times Cameron has always seemed somewhat masochistic, trying too hard to put women up on a pedestal, while making his female characters the most obnoxious sort of harridans.
Now he seems to make a point of it, which is... no thanks.
Thank God the women in my life are not so rattling, unfaithful and domineering.
