Publisher's summary

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce fans and listeners to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan's world as they've never seen it before!

Can science save us when all else fails?

Trisk and her hated rival, Kal, have the same goal: save their species from extinction.

But death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government's new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague rises, giving the paranormal species the choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die or to show themselves in a bid to save them.

Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague-torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved, and Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove not only that humanity does have something to offer but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst, the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

I miss The hollows crazy mysteries

This was a good prequel. A little something to wet the appetite those still missing the hollows. Also good if somebody wants to read this before starting the hollow series. Sure it will provide a couple spoilers but still, it enjoyable. This performer is definitely one of my favorites. She really is able to switch the tone of her voice and give each character their own presence. The story is a bit slow going especially if you either haven't read the hollows or finished it when it ended the previous years. Trying to remember all the bits and pieces in each book that tie into this prequel was difficult. But there are a few websites out there that tie it all together for you and what books can be tied to watch parts. If you just want to refresh your memory.

Excellent Background sketchy science

I very much enjoyed the background storys of some of my favorite characters. The science isn't accurate and that bothered me. Trenton Lee Kalamack alters genetic code and hours later all tomatoes - even those canned and shelved 1 or 2 years ago become lethal. That just doesn't make sense to me. should have tweaked the code and gradual accumulation of the virus. the way it's treated is as if it were a computer virus which could in fact spread just that quickly, even infecting old computers. but the physical virus has no way to spread like it did.

Great story

I have missed this series, I love that it explains so much of the back story that started the whole series.

The Hollows Series Delivers, Again

The narrator was great, as she was on all the other Hollows books she narrated.

The story is pure Hollows, not vastly departing from the style of the previous novels. If you liked any of the Hollows series youll like this.

WHAT AN AWESOME PREQUEL!!!!

Would you listen to The Turn again? Why?

I tend to re-read/listen to my books when they are in a series, but Id listen to this again just to pick up on ALL of the characters from the main Hollows series she touches on that I think I may have missed

What other book might you compare The Turn to and why?

Of course all of The Hollows series, since this is the prequel, but if you like the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter, or Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton (minus the explicit sex scenes), The Hollows are for you.

Which character – as performed by Marguerite Gavin – was your favorite?

Marguerite Gavin is wonderful at creating memorable distinct voices but I loved Orchid the pixie and Gilley the demon (Algaliarept - who is called Al in The Hollows) because they sound like Id imagine a Pixie or Demon to sound.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I basically DID. I started yesterday at work, and listened until I fell asleep and then all day at work today.

Any additional comments?

This is the best prequel Ive ever heard. Seriously. Kim Harrison not only wove an intricate and compelling story about the biological disaster that caused the non-humans (Interlanders) to have to reveal themselves to the humans, and create the world we are reading about in The Hollows; but also gave realistic backstory to KEY characters from The Hollows series, while making their appearances plausible to the current book. Not only that but she managed to regress these characters in such a way that they really DO seem like younger versions of themselves - not the same character, just in a different time. Given the events in this book take place around 40 years prior to The Hollows series I think she did an AMAZING job with this. I would love to see a sequel to this one!!!

Like coming home again

Kim Harrison is one of my favorite authors on earth! I love all of her work, but the Hollows will forever have a special place in my heart and soul. I adored this book. I loved seeing some of the old Hollows characters so much younger, and the new characters were wonderful. Trisk was such a brilliant heroine, the tapestry of new and old characters was a wonder to behold! The story was captivating from beginning to end. If you are a fan of the Hollows this is a must listen.
As expected, Marguerite Gavin was spectacular. To hear her voice a new Hollows book again made me so incredibly happy. You really can't go wrong with Kim Harrison and Marguerite Gavin!
Happy listening!
