About this listen
Peter Diamond, head of Bath CID, takes a city break in Vienna, where his favorite film, The Third Man, was set, but everything goes wrong, and his companion, Paloma, calls a halt to their relationship. Meanwhile, strange things are happening to jobbing musician Mel Farran, who finds himself scouted by methods closer to the spy world than the concert platform. The chance of joining a once-famous string quartet in a residency at Bath Spa University is too tempting for Mel to refuse. Then a body is found in the city canal, and the only clue to the dead woman’s identity is the tattoo of a music note on one of her teeth. For Diamond, who wouldn’t know a Stradivarius from a French horn, the investigation is his most demanding ever. Three mysterious deaths need to be probed while his own personal life is in free fall.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

With a strict set of criteria, she evaluates every request and chooses only a few. No more than one job per country, per year. She will only step in if it's clear that justice will not be served any other way. Her jobs are completed with skill and precision, and never result in inquiry or police investigation. The Fixer is invisible - and quite deadly.

Part of the Peter Diamond Series
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
This title isn't listed in the Peter Diamond Series even though it is, not sure why the oversight on the part of Audible. This is a good story and I wasn't sure who the killer was until very near the end. The only negative for me was the change in the narrator. I have come to expect Simon Prebble as the narrator and the change to Clive Anderson was REALLY difficult to endure. I just didn't care for Mr. Anderson's narration style. However, that shouldn't detract from the story but for me it did. I found it a challenge to stay focused on the characters and the story due to the narration. No criticism for Mr. Lovesey who provided an excellent plot and a wealth of information about string quartets.

A Little Too Long For My Taste
While I've enjoyed several other Peter Diamond mysteries, this one was almost a chore to finish, both because of the narration and because the story seemed to go on & on. The narrator read the story well but without dialogue tags, it was often hard to know who was speaking. I have grown accustomed to the narration of Simon Prebble.

One of the best in this series
Well spun tale. Possibly the best in this series. Narrator does good job. Missed narrator Simon, but this one is good, too, Highly recommended.

New narrator unsatisfactory
this narration threw me off. Some voices so soft could not hear dialog. Interesting plot. Diamond wraps up in few sentences as usual. Interesting complicated plot as usual.

Story is Excellent; Narrator notsomuch.
Some of the conversations are barely audible because of the narrators attempt at varying the voices of the characters. Very annoying.

Interesting but not entertaining
This was a good murder mystery but the narrator lacked in character distinction. I wasn’t interested enough to say it was a great story.

I found the narrator unbearable to listen to. I can't rate the story because I stopped so soon. Love Peter Diamond, guess I will read this one.

Narration: not good
The performer is not good. He whispers for some of the female characters. Not helpful when you’re listening outdoors.

A good detective story
Started out listening to Peter Lovesey's short stories (excellent) and am now on a mission to listen to all his full feature books. Very much like watching a Sherlock Holmes movie in your head or an old black and white movie in color. Enjoying the full books especially since I've yet to figure out "who-done-it" before it was revealed! Gave the performance only 4stars because I couldn't get into the voice of the character "Kat"... probably just me, it might not effect someone else the same way.

Interesting, Well Researched, Great Characters
It got more and more interesting. The Storyline gives particular insight into the arts and culture unfamiliar to me. I found the characters to be unique and interesting. A great read!
