About this listen

USA TODAY BESTSELLER • A wandering fortune teller finds an unexpected family in this cozy fantasy debut, hailed as “perfection…a beautiful treasure of a book that will warm your heart and heal your soul.”—Sarah Beth Durst, Author of The Spellshop

“The warmest, loveliest book I’ve read in ages.”—Sangu Mandanna, author of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Tao is an immigrant fortune teller, traveling between villages with just her trusty mule for company. She only tells "small" fortunes: whether it will hail next week; which boy the barmaid will kiss; when the cow will calve. She knows from bitter experience that big fortunes come with big consequences…

Even if it’s a lonely life, it’s better than the one she left behind. But a small fortune unexpectedly becomes something more when a (semi) reformed thief and an ex-mercenary recruit her into their desperate search for a lost child. Soon, they’re joined by a baker with a "knead" for adventure, and—of course—a slightly magical cat.

Tao starts down a new path with companions as big-hearted as her fortunes are small. But as she lowers her walls, the shadows of her past close in—and she’ll have to decide whether to risk everything to preserve the family she never thought she could have.

Editorial Review

Signs point to cozy, delightful listening
I’m fully on board with the low-stakes fantasy moment we’re having right now, and so hitting play on this debut was a no-brainer for me. Following Tao, a fortune-teller who specializes in foretelling the mundane, Julie Leong spins a yarn about identity and chosen family. Narrator Phyllis Ho is new to me, and she positively sparkled in this story; her voice is at once buoyant, exuberant, and gentle—so fitting for a cozy fantasy. I challenge you not to grin while listening. — Sam D., Audible Editor

Happy ending, a balm to the sore soul. Slightly ridiculous which was fine by me.

I really enjoyed it and the voice is nice but it is sometimes slightly monotone. I can’t always tell the difference in who is speaking. Lovely sounding though. Sometimes it made me sleep and I would have to rewind lol

So sweet!

A lighthearted, cozy read and equally enjoyable listen! While the characters are well rounded with complex and at times sad backstories the overall tone, for me, comfortably falls into ‘cozy book’ territory.

Delightful!

Slightly too simplistic of a resolve but it was a perfect pallet cleanser to darker stories and uncertain times. I loved the characters and the small sub-stories.

The simple magic and family bonds

It's kindof hard to find a cozy read that still captures my interest. This was a good one!

Cozy but not boring!

It was a real good and entertaining listen. I was personally hoping for a deeper dive in the imaginary lands and the different powers of its inhabitants. Still very sweet.
