Acerca de esta escucha

Ernest Hemingway's first novel, The Sun Also Rises, follows the adventures of a group of young, hard-drinking, American expatriates - which Hemingway refers to as the "Lost Generation" - as they pinball through Europe, from France to Spain and back again. Directionless, disillusioned, and fueled by copious amounts of alcohol, narrator Jake Barnes takes the listeners into the heart of 1920's Europe, particularly Paris and Pamplona (where the characters witness the infamous running of the bulls and Jake develops as fascination with bullfighting).

At once cynical and satiric, The Sun Also Rises was the first cry of a new literary voice that would come to dominate the first half of the 20th century.

The seminal novel from Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway, the book appears here in its unabridged and original format.

A riveting story. A classic in any time.

I first read The Sun Also Rises in my twenties. It was one of my favorite books. I can see why a reader today might not see why it was such a big deal, but it was rightfully a tremendously influential novel. Still an excellent read and moving on many levels.

It still holds up

Love Hemingway and was looking forward to listening to one of the few books of his I haven’t experienced. The narrator was awesome and then around chapter 8 the censors went into overdrive. For an ‘unabridged’ version I was surprised and seriously disappointed. Censorship in all forms on great literature must end!!

Great story and narration…the censorship was not needed.

This is my first Hemingway book. I’ve heard great things about his books, so maybe this isn’t his best work. I look forward to listening/reading his other books.

THE SUN ALSO RISES is excellently written. His style is flawless and his narrative thorough, without excessive details. However, the story doesn’t ever offer huge stakes. The lesson I gathered is: aren’t the lives of these characters sad and rudderless?

I was constantly waiting for something to happen, anything! But nothing happens. A random guy gets gutted by a bull and a couple of main characters fist fight but that’s about it. If youre going to get into Hemingway’s books I wouldn’t recommend this one.

Great story telling, uneventful story

I downloaded this book as I left Pamplona for Madrid. I knew nothing about the story except for its setting in Pamplona and its tale of bullfighting. But it is so much more. It is a living travelogue that will forever keep the memory of Pamplona, San Sébastien, and the French coastal towns alive in my mind. It’s also a story of the ease of friendship. Most of all I loved the way Hemingway captures the world through the details - the way he describes a room, a person, an experience - short sentences that freeze moments in time. The narration is excellent.

Settle in and let the richness of this story wash over you

The voices, as well as the pronunciations were great as well as adding some tonal shifts in places I didn’t notice on the first read through! :)
The story was very immersive, and felt as if you were reading a diary could get a little boring and confusing at certain points.

Everything just felt right with the voice and the story matching well

The narrator did a great job transitioning between all the European accents, and following a clear consistent voice for each character. It was easy to follow even through Hemingway's sparsely decorated dialogue.

Awesome narration

I actually had to stop listening to another version of this audiobook because the accents and performance was so terrible. This version, on the other hand, does such justice to Hemingway’s writing style and to the character’s accents and personalities. It’s a fully realized performance of a classic!

Standout performance

I did not realize the Hemingway was an anti-Semite. The repeated and unnecessary anti-Semitic remarks were unnecessary and in no way contributed to the storyline with was, at best… boring…. The narration was excellent.

I was surprised

The first book I read by Hemingway was "The Old Man and the Sea" and by comparison, imo, this was disappointing. The dialog is so repetitive in their conversations, endless repetitions. I'm glad I read it but only bc it's a classic. I thought the narrator was excellent. I would listen to other audio books narrated by him.

Great narration buy disappointing story.
