About this listen

An Angeleno strapped for cash. A vampire who doesn't suck blood. A primeval monster monopolizing the city with deception....

Sign-twirling and rideshare-driving while waiting for his next casting call take a backseat to track down the supernatural for a pretty penny.

When John Hunter finds out he can get paid $5,000 for trapping a rogue chimera, it's game on.

Now, he'll have a crash course on the goings-on of the secret underworld and more than a few bruises to prove his mettle.

But not all is as straightforward as it may seem. There are those closest to Jonny who are more than they're letting on. And the humans in his life turn out to be the worst kind of monsters. Jonny may be able to save himself, if he wants to save the city from an unspeakable, ancient evil lurking in the shadows, he'll have to catch up fast.

For fans of Larry Correia's Monster Hunters International, Martha Carr's Go Dwarf Yourself, and Hunter Blain's Preternatural Chronicles comes your next romp in the graveyard. Because monster hunting has never been this much fun.

Pretty cool for a vampire book

He’s your average, struggling LA model just trying to book his next gig. When John finds out that the supernatural lives among us, it's game on. Sign-twirling and rideshare-driving while waiting for his next casting call soon take a backseat to hunt the supernatural for a pretty penny.

But not all is as straightforward as it may seem. There are those close to John who are more than they're letting on and that spells trouble for our reluctant hero - big trouble.

I'm not a horror fan but occasionally branch out from my root genres of sci-fi and speculative fiction, and this was a fun read. The MC was a very relatable character. Poor kid who was picked on in HS, goes to LA to turn his life around and make a life. Then things get freaky.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.5/5, with 5-star narration

Well worth the somewhat slow start.

Though the story starts with mainly exposition instead of an instant hook, it’s well worth the time investment. I love a book that starts off with an action scene. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book’s story arc. It opens with a few chapters of character development and world building. From there it’s a solid mix of action and plot development carrying into a solid sequence of climactic chapters. The narration is solid throughout the book with great character nuances. I also enjoyed the unconventional approach to different “well known” characters and character types (models, groups, a certain trainer I won’t name, and others). The story answers enough questions to satisfy yet leaves enough unanswered questions to leave you eagerly wanting more. All in all a fun and absorbing ride.

Pleasant Surprise

This one took me by surprise. Wasn’t expecting it to grab my attention like it did. Glad I took a chance. It was really good and I’m looking forward to the second book.

Action packed

The story was a little slow getting started, but I understand why it was necessary. There is a lot of fighting/action. I liked the characters. It took a minute to get used to the narrator, but he did a great job keeping my interest and making it easy to listen to.

Funny story with great narration!

This was a funny book, I chuckled quite a bit. Great narrator. The characters were all pretty good, although I hated Shannon at first.

1st in series Urban Fantasy

Interesting and humorous a fun urban fantasy story. First in series so a lot of world building in the beginning. Story includes Models, Actors, Vampires, Witches, Hellhounds and Hunters.

Continuous action and surprises

This author never disappoints. There was nonstop action throughout. I feel like I know Johnny, Shannon and Evan. Johnny, the main character, is someone you can really relate to. Just your average guy trying to make it day to day. He works thankless jobs, always trying his best to make it big in the modeling or acting world. He was picked on as a kid so it’s doubly hard to have confidence trying out for hemorrhoid cream commercials. But all the competition and cut throat business of the glamorous world isn’t the worse Johnny has to deal with. He doesn’t know the half of it. Yet all is not lost. After all, he still has Tracey, his fiancé. He’s over the moon that she had agreed to marry him. And there’s his roommate, who’s also his best friend. And now there’s a new tenet in his apartment building. She seems pretty nice and kick ass. But not everyone is who they appear to be. Good and bad, you will love most the characters. There are some you will love to hate. There’s one I wish would’ve been killed off lol. Johnny’s introduction into the world of supernaturals is swift and brutal. There’s mysteries throughout and twists I didn’t see coming. I loved it! I can’t wait for the next one to see how the characters are doing. The world is so well written. It’s amazing.

If you listen to audiobooks, the narrator really brings it all to life. He even does great female voices. He was perfect for this book.

Hilarious!

John is your boy next door who has struggled with bullying in his youth. Now that he’s older, he’s a struggling actor/model. Let me tell you, his story as a adult is pretty hilarious. I don’t know how he finds himself into these situations but, I loved it. The plot was intriguing and his girlfriend, Tracy Coach Prada is something else. 🤣 YES!! That’s her name. LOL
I really loved the secondary characters, Evan and Shannon. I loved Shannon. Shannon becomes John’s sidekick. She is a firecracker and comes out guns blazing.
The narrator, Steven Barnett is a great narrator. He used a variety of voices and inflections that elevated the story. You could tell when certain characters were emotional bc you could hear/feel it in the voice. It was a great listen and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to listening to the next book.

Better Than I Anticipated

I am a big fan of this genre and was looking for something similar to Monster Hunters International, Bubba the Monster Hunter and the G.O.A.T Harry Blackstone Dresden. This could potentially turn into that kind of series.
