About this listen

When it comes to supernatural intrigue, nobody does it better than New York Times best-selling author Simon R. Green.

Eddie Drood, at your service. For generations my family has been keeping humanity safe from the wicked, the nasty, and the generally not-nice inhuman predators who feed on people’s fear and misery. No one kicks evil arse better than us Droods - especially yours truly.

In fact, my arse-kicking skills have come to the attention of the legendary Alexander King, Independent Agent extraordinaire, who spent a lifetime doing anything and everything - for the right price. Now he’s on his deathbed, looking to bestow all of his priceless secrets to a worthy successor.

To decide, King challenges six competitors - myself included - to solve five mysteries all around the world, figuring that along the way we’ll backstab one another until only one remains. But I’ve got to win at all costs, because King holds the most important secret of all to the Droods: the identity of the traitor in our midst.

Best so far!

I’ve enjoyed the other Simon Green series. In the Drood series #1 & 2 we’re about the same. This one was completely different story! It was great encountering Walker again! Old friend? Maybe! References to the Nightside and Shadows were fun :-) New narrator had appropriate British accent. Maybe Australian? Nice driving book!

Another winner

Enjoyed the heck out of this one. More complex than others in this series. Perfect ending.

Great narration

Narrator was great for a secret agent character. This was an enjoyable story and it was fun to see crossover from the nightside

Five stories and backstabbing to tie it together

“Soft as a dove’s fart”
This third book has the stuff I like about the related Nightside series (shorter, grittier, and more banter) and the stuff I like about this series (urban fantasy spycraft and well written, backstabbing mystery).

“You can’t work in the shadows and expect applause.”
Even better, this installment gets away from apocalyptic plots and family politics and delivers five UF mystery procedurals as Eddie competes against other supernatural heavies. Each mystery is engaging. Each competitor is captivating, particularly Walker from the Nightside series. And you get the bonus “and then there were none” mystery of who’s knocking off the competitors. This also has Langton narrating, whom I prefer.
