The country of Kazure bows under the shadow of war as the Shindori lords from the east continue to wage their holy crusade. Kaori Sansa, the High Lord of Kazure, is desperately searching for a way to defend his people while he struggles to determine which of the lords in his own country can be trusted to see the war through. Meanwhile, Hunter confronts his inner demons as the horrors of his past come back to haunt him, and he comes face to face with the criminal organization that enslaved him as a child. Both men must fight to uphold their oaths - both to Kazure and to each other - while the forces gathering around them are doing everything in their power to bring them down. - Sacred Guardian, Book III

Narrator Dan Calley gave a good performance. Not his personal best, but I suspect he struggled as much as I did, as we dragged our depressed arses through the metaphorical valley of death, like five times before we reached any action. Darnit this was a long one. I did like the ending, it made up for all the wait. I’m not exaggerating, seven hours into the audiobook I had to question my sanity and do a few mental exercises, take a bubble bath and regroup my efforts into finishing it. Listeners who like road trips, by foot, barefoot will love it. It is very detailed, and if you are not in a rush, I mean you want to stop and smell the roses, then continue with this book. It has almost no sex in it, medium to little dark content, and only hints at subjects like child abuse. I could not decide whether this is the build-up to something big, or is this the come down after the excitement and awesomeness of books one and two.
I did like it when Shinja appeared. I always do! It’s just sad that it was so short-lived. I loved HFN ending and that the family was able to touch the snake-dragon creature, whatever it is. That was an awesome scene described by the author.
I do recommend this audiobook for those days you have nothing to do, lie next to the pool or on the beach where you can half fall asleep and wake to take a sip of your pina colada and change positions to prevent pressure sores on your forehead.
