Review The Sorcerer’s Ascension book1

William Turbett’s narration of this book is clear ( good discernment of characters ) and conveys the emotion of each scene. This is always a challenge in the first of a series with the inherent details of character and world building. Brock Deskins is showing his skill as he lays out the foundational groundworks of a series that may prove to be one of the hottest series produced in some time. In this first book we live through the devastating details of our lead character’s life, which leads from high society into the depths of life on the street. We see magic developing in his life and end the book as he moves into his own; hanging us, in anticipation of book2. I am happy to give reviews of each book as we progress, and as a reviewer my copies are free.

Wow, what an excellent tale!

I received this audio book for free in exchange for my honest review. The writing and narration both combine smoothly in this magical tale. This ranks up there in the top of the list of fantasy books I've had the pleasure of enjoying.

Entertaining Story And Performance...

This Was A Very Good Story And Performance... I Was Surprised At How Well Detailed The Story Followed Throughout The Main Character's Early Teenage Years...I Look Forward To More Audio Books From This Story And Although The Narrator Sound Like He Had Some Nasal Problems He Done An Excellent Job Voicing All The Colorful Characters... A Very Promising Audio Book Series..

Solid first book

The narration is stellar! Great differentiations, pace, voice patterns/speeds. Highly recommend William Turbett!!

The story is a solid start to a series and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to the second book. This is not a book for children. If this were a movie and everything was shown, it would be R for gore/violence. There is some attempted rape but nothing is written in a revealing manner. There aren’t any super rough language outside of bastard (no Fbombs) and other language is borderline medium at worst.

A good mix of fast and slow paced, I’d recommend this book if you enjoy books revolving around magic and the like. Bring on book two!!

The Sorcerer's Ascension

Actual Rating 3.5 stars for Overall and Story

Having listened to another book by the author that I enjoyed, I had high hopes for this novel. Unfortunately I didn't feel that this was as strong as Shrouds of Darkness.

Title:

The title was a bit misleading as the whole concept of sorcery doesn't come up until the very end of the book.

Narration:

This is one of the few books where I found it difficult to multitask while listening, because the narrator seemed to be rushing through all the text. I tried to slow it down on my iPod but the voice became too distorted. It made it hard to focuses on the story. He also mispronounced a few words, the tonality was sometimes off, and at times I could hear a slight echo suggesting that he wasn't in a sound proof room while recording.

Story:

This story didn't start for me until 7 hours into the recording. When he goes to school and starts learning about magic, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. Until then, it felt like one of any number of other fantasy novels featuring an orphan surviving on the streets. Up until the protagonist goes to school, I felt like it was kind of a bait and switch story given the title. You'd expect a magic heavy book about a protagonist learning about magic things. That's not this novel. This also could have benefited from a few more editing passes, to add more contractions to make the dialogue sound more natural. I really wish the last third of the book was stretched out into at least double its length, and everything before that was compressed. With that, and the editing of dialogue, this could have been a solid 4* novel. As it is, I could take it or leave it.

Story so far is great however...

I very much like the story and it is good enough to have me get the next book but the narrator is terrible.

Liked the story. Wasn't fond of the narrator.

Good story that I found to be engaging and kept me interested. Good characters that grew and developed over time. This is a fun story that i would recommend. My only problem was the occasional mispronounced words by the narrator. They weren't often, but there were a few of them and each time they really distracted me from the book. Unnatural sounding audio, pretty good overall

I don't know if there is an audio filter applied that is making the narratory voice sounds hollow and nasally. There are a few segments at the beginning of various chapters that sound clear and normal, but mostly the book sounds nasally. The book has a rough start, but gets pretty good after the first quarter or so.

Good start to a new series

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I thought this was a decent start to a series. It did a good job of world and character building. The narration was pretty good too. All in all, it was an entertaining story and a good experience. I would be open to more in this series.
