About this listen

In a remote, Himalayan monastery, Matt Lester has devoted five years of spiritual preparation for this moment: it is his destiny to open an ancient, sealed scroll containing prophetic wisdom the world urgently needs. But when his time comes, violent assailants steal the scroll. Matt is caught up in a dangerous, high-stakes hunt to recover it, turning him from the pursuer to the pursued.

On the other side of the world, the results of scientist Alice Weisenstein’s mind-body healing research are about to be revealed.

Things take a sinister turn when her supervisor goes missing – and she realises she is being followed.

Guided by the lamas, Matt’s search for the scroll takes him to Alice. The pair become caught between powerful influences and escalating threats. Together they must decide who they can really trust.

A thriller imbued with Buddhist teachings

I think it is best to have read the first book (The Magician of Lhasa) before this, because it creates continuity and context. I really enjoyed this book. At times, I found the plot unfolding a little like a Tintin comic, but then I love Tintin comics too, and funnily enough, there is something about Tintin in the plot! What is always interesting and uplifting in Michie’s books are the Buddhist concepts.

A very enjoyable listen!

So much fun to enjoy this second in the series. Keep them coming! Now that there are two in the series, it has me thinking of them a bit like a Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew series for adult Buddhist listeners! ;) For me personally, having spent time in Nepal and also in West Los Angeles, it has been an extra joy to have the many references to familiar streets and areas of town… Love the creativity and the collection of characters.

Love this series!

Both books in this series were totally enjoyable and fascinating listens! I would say the pace and tone were slower and quieter in The Magician of Lhasa,, while The Secret Mantra centered on the adventure of the archetypal quest. The author does an excellent job of narration, with a pleasant voice perfect for the story.
I learned so much at a very deep level while being totally engaged and entertained. One of my favorites out of over a thousand audibles! Reminds me of Dan Brown's DaVinci Code, but with more non fictional content embedded in the work. Can't wait for the next one in the Matt Lester series!

I love this book!

I think this is the first review I have written, but I just finished it , and am feeling filled with equanimity and generosity, so here goes...
I lived this book! I have practiced Buddhist meditation for years, so am predisposed to enjoying connected writings, but have never read any fiction about anything Buddhist! So it was a total treat to come across this intelligent, well written story that included humor, action and very relatable characters! The topic of Medical Buddha was perfect for me right now as well; I am currently experiencing a very challenging time both physically and emotionally, and loved that this book directly dealt with a Buddhist way of healing such conditions...:)

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is like minded , as well as anyone who is spiritually minded and just wants a fun read!

was a skeptic but was won over

Not fond of authors performing their own work. It took awhile to to get into the book but a few chapters in I was hooked.

FAIR

I expected more from this book, after reading the first one in the series, which is no longer available.
The first one was good, this one not so good, especially if you cannot read the first one.
I totally enjoy “ The Dalai Lama’s Cat” series by the same author.
The author, as the narrator is a pleasure to listen to.
My thanks to all involved, JK
