Outstanding Listen

The movie The Searchers is my favorite of all time, but I must say the book is better.

A true western classic

Often gritty, sometimes amusing, frequently thrilling but always gripping and enthralling this is really one of the great western classics. Some changes from the movie but superior in every way.

Outstanding Story

Harsher than the movie but very enjoyable. The performance by Tom Stechschulte is first rate, full of passion and intensity. I read this book 50 years ago but throughly enjoyed revisiting and realized there were parts that I had forgotten . It’s hard to imagine the harsh frontier where this type of occurrence took place. The uniqueness of this story is the relentless pursuit. I believe the reality of most captive children left most families helpless to do anything but grieve as few if any homesteaders would have had the means or abilities to continue a long term search.

One of the Best

First hour is just commentary about the movie. Only knock on performance is a bit too strong of a John Wayne imitation. Very engaging listen of an obvious all time classic.

Great story great characters

This narrator is right up there with George Guidall and his narration of Amos is the very best

Very realistic

This book is much more realistic than the movie the searchers with John Wayne. And while the movie has some similar incidents, the ending of the book is quite different. This is one of the best westerns about Texas. I have ever read historically accurate with a engaging story.

Brilliant, well written and entertaining.

I've always held that the Searchers is the greatest western movie made. Finding the novel was a treat. And while there were many discrepancies between book and movie, they are nonetheless excellent stories.

A compelling story. It hooked me and held me tight to the end. The narrator was perfect. This is one of the best reads I have had in a while.

Riveting, redemptive.

This story shows what it is to be a man to overcome all hardships including trauma for the ones he loves. Makes me want to long my family and friends more.
