About this listen
The Science of Marijuana, Third Edition is directed at a public interested in knowing more about cannabis, how it works, and what the hazards associated with its use may be.
In terms of cannabis as a medicine, it is now sanctioned by a majority of US states, with approved medical indications that often go beyond what is really known scientifically about the effectiveness of cannabis treatment. Some countries and US states have approved full legalization of cannabis for adults; the regulations needed to control such legal use are still being worked out. The pros and cons of cannabis legalization are reviewed.
There have been big changes in the public perception of cannabis and increased support for legalization. The book comes at a timely moment in this debate.

Legal marijuana is the hottest story in the US today. Story
Of all the things humans rely on plants for - sustenance, beauty, medicine, fragrance, flavor, fiber - surely the most curious is our use of them to change consciousness: to stimulate or calm, fiddle with or completely alter, the qualities of our mental experience. Take coffee and tea: People around the world rely on caffeine to sharpen their minds. But we do not usually think of caffeine as a drug, or our daily use as an addiction, because it is legal and socially acceptable.

Cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two most prominent cannabinoids found in cannabis, the plant family that incorporates both hemp and pot. While there are more than 100 diverse cannabinoids so far known in cannabis by scientists, THC and CBD are by a long shot the most broadly considered and best understood. This book is an in-depth analysis on cannabis, going back into its history, its difference from THC, an explanation of THC, how THC dominates marijuana, and CBD dominates hemp.

Story
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

The search brings new types of medication and re-establishes those that may have been forgotten with time. A great example of this is the healthful benefits of the hemp plant. This simple, but powerful, cannabis plant variety has been the subject of attention for the past few years, after the endocannabinoid system within the body was discovered by medical scientists to be influential to certain types of body's responses to diseases.

Each of the patients was quite ill and obviously suffering with one or more very serious medical conditions. Prior to sedating each patient, Dr. Huggins asked Dr. Levy to administer a specific protocol of vitamin C. Dr. Levy had never performed, or even heard of such a practice, but was greatly impressed as each patient left the dental office markedly improved - many were asymptomatic.

Story
Lurking in our homes, hiding in our offices, and polluting the air we breathe is something sinister. Something we’ve turned a blind eye to for far too long. Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a pediatrician, professor, and world-renowned researcher, tells the story of how our everyday surroundings are making us sicker, fatter, and poorer. Through a blend of narrative, scientific detective work, and concrete information about the connections between chemicals and disease, he reveals what we can do to protect ourselves and our families in the short-term, and how we can help bring the change we deserve.

Story
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Story
One out of three women alive today, and one out of two men, will face a cancer diagnosis, according to the World Health Organization. Ty Bollinger takes this personally: in the course of a decade, he says, "I lost my entire family to cancer. I don't believe I had to lose them." The Truth about Cancer has been written for one simple reason: to share the knowledge we need to protect ourselves, treat ourselves, and in some cases save our lives or the lives of those we love.

It is called the "Great Imitator," and inaccurate testing - combined with a fierce, ongoing debate that questions chronic infection - makes it difficult for sufferers to find effective care.

Story
For more than two hundred years, disturbances of the mind—the sorts of things that were once called "madness"—have been studied and treated by the medical profession. Mental illness, some insist, is a disease like any other, whose origins can be identified and from which one can be cured. But is this true? In this masterful account of America's quest to understand and treat everything from anxiety to psychosis, one of the most provocative thinkers writing about psychiatry today sheds light on its tumultuous past.

Immersive, a powerful introduction to the explanations behind Cannabis
I gave this the best rating I possibly could, due to the density of information in this third edition. I LOVED it. I’ve been attempting career introduction into the cannabis industry, and thus book made me exponentially more informed of the historic and scientific relevance of cannabis & it’s terpenes, flavonoids, cannabinoids, uses, and a variety of other information. I rated the performance as a 4 - though I believe the narrator excellently performed, this book just had too many technical references for me to understand everything through his accent (heavy English, it sounded), in times when he spoke quickly/changed chapters - a few laws mentioned, cannabinoids, and processes I still don’t know what he said. That aside, i loved this book. I did also order the physical copy so that I can reread, as well as go back to understand what I couldnt through narration. 10/10 would recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is interested in getting your feet fully wet in understanding cannabis. Prepare yourself for rabbit-holes of questions that you crave to be answered after this one!

Outdated Information
I consider this book an historical document that is not current to the information available at its time of publication. It is a good reference for the history of cannabis testing, knowledge and anecdotal uses. It only covers a few cannabinoids and never mentions terpenes and the entourage effect with cannabinoids.
This information was known 5 years before this book was published.
