About this listen

A thrilling adventure in a world one step away from total subjugation by machines

After long years of war, the United States has sued for peace, yielding to a brutal coalition of nations ruled by fascist machines. One-quarter of the country is under foreign occupation. Manhattan has been annexed by a weird robot monarchy, and in Tennessee a permanent peace is being delicately negotiated between the battered remnants of the US government and an envoy of implacable machines.

Canadian businessman Barry Simcoe arrives in occupied Chicago days before his hotel is attacked by a rogue war machine. In the aftermath, he meets a dedicated Russian medic with the occupying army and 19 Black Winter, a badly damaged robot. Together they stumble on a machine conspiracy to unleash a horrific plague - and learn that the fabled American resistance is not as extinct as everyone believes. Simcoe races against time to prevent the extermination of all life on the continent...and uncover a secret that America's machine conquerors are desperate to keep hidden.

Happy surprise

I gave this book a chance and I’m glad I did I really enjoyed it. I wish it was part of a series or set, there is so much more that could be told about this world it was kinda sad that it ended and there isn’t more.

Very, very good book.

I really enjoyed this book.

Twist and turns within the story allows for many more books to come. My only issue is that they are not available for me to download now!

Kudos to the new writer and choosing a great narrator. Too many time, new books are ruined by poor narration.

A truly unique take on a common theme.

The book was excellent. The author managed to create a truly unique take on the world ruled by machines story. The narrator was good, however regularly quoted characters may have sounded better as different voice actors.

Very interesting take on the future

I enjoyed the structure of the story, as if each chapter was a blog, but most I enjoyed looking at the future where humans and robots will co-exist as humans gradually are replaced by ever more competent and powerful robots.

Not Bad, but Definitely Slow.

Not to take anything away from the author's obvious intelligence, but this book read the way that some video games play:

It was obviously working towards something, but it was chock full of "side missions" and "rabbit holes" that weren't bad, but weren't too exciting either. Ultimately, each of them would advance the story in some small way...but it often took a long time to get there.

The premise was cool, the performance was solid, and I finished it...but it was far from a page-turner (can an audio book be a page-turner?)

Great Listen, even after misreading description.

Great listen, definitely an author I’ll keep an eye out for. Am a little jaded, but a bunch of books- start up than place on standby. But Robots of Gotham grabbed my attention and kept me entertained even after I discovered I misread story description.

Refreshing AI Story

This is a great story with a unique take on an AI apocalypse. The characters, especially the robots, are great, and the plot switches very smoothly between fast paced action and thoughtful planning.

Deeper than the Title Would Suggest

McAulty packs a lot of thoughtful ideas about technology, politics and what it means to be human into a somewhat long adventure story. His world-building is impressive without being overbearing. Winton's delivery is solid-- energetic without being overbearing.
