About this listen

Ever so slowly, Dakota Territory is being transformed from a vast prairie into rich farmland. With the coming of the railroad, the small town of Blessing begins to prosper, and the Bjorklund family is reaping the promised harvest that had lured them from their beloved home in Norway.

But for Ingeborg and Haakan, realizing their dreams will not come without a struggle. After their own fields are harvested, Haakan and the neighboring men take the steam engine and the separator on the road, threshing for other homesteaders in return for a portion of their grain. With Haakan away and the fields standing idle, Ingeborg frets over work yet to be done. Fearing an early change of seasons, she takes matters into her own hands.

Has the land become more important to Ingeborg than her own family?

Meaty, warm saga of prairie life

This book is part of a series which became a series of series. I have read or listened to the entire saga and it wouldn't let me go. This is my second round and it is every bit as good as the first. This is one of my qualifications for a 5-star book.

The settlement of Blessing is taking shape. They now have a school, a church, a general store, a blacksmith and a railroad runs through it. More people, some family, have immigrated from Norway, an old woman of French Canadian-Native American ancestry has brought her healing skills to the community full time. Others have travelled from Missouri and instead of passing through have found a home. These are the bare bones, but the stories are much, much more. I highly recommend it.

I gave the narration 4-stars simply because she read very fast. I tried to slow the narration (a first for me), but 25% slower was too slow. She has a pleasant voice and told the story well.

The Reapers Song

I loved the way Lausanne began this story immediately going in another direction weaving the characters in at a later date !!! A story within a story !! I have finished the series in a better mindset with a deeper love for spontaneous prayer .

Red River of the North Series

I have been enjoying the whole Red River of the North series so far. It has given me a better understanding of how life was like for the Dakota settlers.

New Characters! The Reaper's Song

I like the ideas of new characters moving into the Dakota Territory. It is showing the flow of the population through the states after the Civil War in to 1880s. The town of Blessing now has a bank. And soon a rooming house will be built.
The train goes through the town.

This was book #4 in the series. I am enjoying listening to stories and not watching tv reruns. It has also improved my conversation listening skills when I talk to people (audio books).

The narrator does a great job! I'm getting used to her voice.

Two young boys entered into the story later in the chapters. Father dead; mother ran off. And the boys were hopping trains to head west. They didn't want to be split up to different families or go to an orphanage. It is a minor story with a few scenes but it impressed me that children had the gumption to just leave on their on and hop trains.

The McCallister story line was an added pleasure to the series. Gunfights were a common event during that time.

A wonderful book #4 in this series. I am glued to listening. It reminds me of what radio shows must have been like in the 1930s and 40s prior to tv. Audio books are indeed a great way to spend my time as I do house chores.
