About this listen

An electrifying true story of one young woman's nightmarish descent into the hell of schizophrenia and her courageous battle to rejoin the real world, such is the story of Lori Schiller. Once she had it all - a loving family, devoted friends, intelligence, and opportunity. Then at age 15 she began to suffer from symptoms of schizophrenia, hearing voices that began to take over her life. At 23, she committed herself to a private mental institution and spent the next 7 years waging a war against the voices that urged her to kill her family, her doctor, herself. This account of a journey into and out of madness is at once gripping, heartening, and ultimately triumphant.©1994 Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett, All Rights Reserved, Abridgment Approved by the Authors (P)16 9; 1994 Time Warner AudioBooks, A Time Warner Company, A Joint Venture of The Atlantic Group and Time Warner Trade Publishing Mental Health Politicians Psychology Women Emotionally Gripping Heartfelt Schizophrenia Memoirs

Great story but sound quality is horrendous

This story is extremely interesting and very engaging but holy hell... what is with the audio quality? It sounds like it is being played off an old worn tape cassette and sometimes it is almost impossible to understand what they are saying unless you take the time to go back and relisten to try and figure it out.

Good book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it was pretty interesting how this disease takes over her life

What other book might you compare The Quiet Room to and why?

Brain on fire, because they both had brain disorders and they both describe what the patient went thru

What aspect of Mary Beth Hurt’s performance would you have changed?

Sounded like an older person than the one in the book

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Cry, felt very sorry for what this person went thru

Any additional comments?

Very interesting book really kept my attention

Interesting insight into mental illness

Not something I normally listen too but was surprised how closely it paralleled my aunt's continuing battle with mental illness. I picked it up for a road trip listen. I would especially recommend it to someone who has to deal with someone suffering from mental illness.

awakening

a beautifully written and narrated account of a soul compromised by the mental disease of schizophrenia... after listening to this story, i have gained much hope in successful care and treatment of my own family members. it was like listening to an old friend

could not stop listening.

Excellently written and read. I highly recommend this book to everyone. This book kept my interest all the way through the end. Not to the end but through the end. Meaning I wanted more after I finished.

Good book, fair audio quality

Quality of the audio is not great, but still intelligible. Sounds like it was transferred from a cassette tape.

Great story on schizophrenia

Good insight into the life of someone with schizophrenia. Nicely told, with alternating perspectives between the person with the illness og the other persons involved. Shows how important it is to show respect and warmth in a therapeutic setting.

The narrators had a pleasant voice, and i felt they expressed some of the emotions felt. But the overall quality of the audiobook is not to good. Sounds like a recording from a cassette, and a few of the words become lost in the static and the weird music between chapters.

Still recommended for someone Wanting a perspective into schizophrenia!

Well worth the read or the listen!

I work in the field of psychiatry and found this a very informative look into the very complex and difficult world of the mentally ill. The book not only is told by the patient but by her parents too, which adds a very interesting insight. If you have ever wondered about the world of schizophrenia, this is a must read.
