About this listen
Major Richard J. "Dick" Meadows is renowned in military circles as a key figure in the development of the U.S. Army Special Operations. A highly decorated war veteran of the engagements in Korea and Vietnam, Meadows was instrumental in the founding of the U.S. Delta Force and hostage rescue force. Although he officially retired in 1977, Meadows could never leave the army behind, and he went undercover in the clandestine operations to free American hostages from Iran in 1980.
The Quiet Professional: Major Richard J. Meadows of the U.S. Army Special Forces is the only biography of this exemplary soldier's life. Military historian Alan Hoe offers unique insight into Meadows, having served alongside him in 1960. The Quiet Professional is an insider's account that gives a human face to U.S. military strategy during the cold war.
Major Meadows often claimed that he never achieved anything significant; The Quiet Professional proves otherwise, showcasing one of the great military minds of 20th-century America.

Kandahar. The ancient desert crossroads and, as of fall of 2001, ground zero for the Taliban and al-Qa'ida in southern Afghanistan. In the northern part of the country, the US-supported Northern Alliance has made progress on the battlefield, but in the south, the country is still under the Taliban's bloody hold and al-Qa'ida continues to operate there. With no "Southern Alliance" for the US to support, a new strategy is needed if victory is to be achieved. Story
Sometime in 1965, James Hawes landed in the Congo with cash stuffed in his socks, morphine in his bag, and a basic understanding of his mission: recruit a mercenary navy and suppress the Soviet- and Chinese-backed rebels engaged in guerilla movements against a pro-Western government. He knew the United States must preserve deniability, so he would be abandoned in any life-threatening situation; he did not know that Che Guevara was attempting to export his revolution a few miles away. Cold War Navy SEAL gives unprecedented insight into a clandestine chapter in US history through the experiences of Hawes, a distinguished Navy frogman and later a CIA contractor. His journey began as an officer in the newly-formed SEAL Team 2, where Hawes commanded boats in the CIA's series of covert, hit-and-run raids into North Vietnam. Those raids directly instigated the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

When Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, triggering the First Gulf War, a coalition of 35 countries led by the United States responded with Operation Desert Storm, which culminated in a 100-hour coordinated air strike and ground assault that repelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Though largely forgotten in descriptions of the war, an eight-day barrage of artillery fire made this seemingly rapid offensive possible. Wanted: Volunteers for Project Delta. Will guarantee you a medal. A body bag. Or both. With this call to arms, Charlie Beckwith revolutionized American armed combat. Beckwith's acclaimed memoir tells the story of Delta Force as only its maverick creator could tell it - from the bloody baptism of Vietnam to the top-secret training grounds of North Carolina to political battles in the upper levels of the Pentagon itself. This is the heart-pounding, first-person insider's view of the missions that made Delta Force legendary.

The massive armies of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies posed a huge threat to the nations of Western Europe. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the juggernaut they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. Their mission, should hostilities commence, was to wreak havoc behind enemy lines and buy time for vastly outnumbered NATO forces to conduct a breakout from the city.

They landed in a dust storm so thick the pilot used dead reckoning and a guess to find the ground. Welcomed by a band of heavily armed militiamen, they climbed a mountain on horseback to meet the most ferocious warlord in Asia. They plotted a war of nineteenth-century maneuvers against a twenty-first-century foe. They trekked through minefields, sometimes past the mangled bodies of local tribesmen who'd shared food with them hours before. The men they helped called them brothers. Hollywood called them the Horse Soldiers. They called themselves Green Berets—Special Forces ODA 595.

Great Story of an American Legend
I have read a great deal of books about MACV-SOG, Special Forces, LRRPs, SEALs, Rangers, etc and the name Dick Meadows seems to have come up frequently as one revered by the toughest and most dangerous men on Earth. This book definitely delivered and it was awesome to finally get the whole story of the man behind the legend. It had a really interesting chapter near the end that detailed some of the ways Meadows was able to maintain a happy marriage and family despite all of the challenges of his profession. I think that chapter would be great reading for men like Meadows as I understand divorce rates are extremely high in the warrior profession. That is sad, these men are such passionate patriots and they should be able to somehow enjoy their families and not suffer the pain of everything falling apart because of stress, deployments, etc. I hope someone can benefit from this recounting of the tactics Meadows used to ensure his family would survive the rigors of military life as successfully as possible.

Written like Dick would have written it. No fanfare or grandeur; just mentioning and explaining the details of intense years into simple action reports. But it was written very well and captures the essence of the man. well worth a read to understand a spec ops legend.

Another possibly good book ruined by poor performance
I have read SOG and listened to the audio, so I’ve heard of Dick Meadows and I was excited to listen to his story. I haven’t finished listening to the book yet and am only about halfway through so I don’t want to give the book a bad rating. That being said I don’t understand how some of these readers get paid to do their job. When I’m listening to a good one I am able to listen and focus on the book as well as whatever else I’m doing, and don’t want to stop listening. This guy makes me feel like I’m being put to sleep or when I’m listening for a while I have no idea what I just heard for the last 20 minutes. I don’t get it, having a hard time finishing it honestly the reader is just too boring and monotone for me. Should’ve bought paperback version I guess.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.
