Publisher's summary

The nightmare has begun...but where is the Black Dragon?

After a thousand years, the Eternal Enemy has breached the Great Walls, devastating great swathes of the City. Thousands lie dead, while the survivors huddle behind the old and decaying walls of the inner defenses.

With the greenhides on one side, and the corrupt and cruel regime of the ruling Gods on the other, the people of the City await their end.

All that stands in the way is a disgraced Champion, a tortured God, and two Mortals from a forgotten legend....

Just missed excellence

I really enjoyed the series. This book has a lot that's good in it, and at least two weaknesses. First as in the first two installments of the series, I wish there was more detail in the descriptive writing as scenes are set.

Second, and more important to me, is that the writing created a narrative in this book best described as similar to the Perils of Pauline. Some of you may have to look this up. In rotating order, the main characters of the story faced dire predicaments and due to the length of the book, they would wait their turn and then face another round being confronted by great danger.

I would prefer fewer but more elaborate predicaments with higher stakes. Nonetheless, this is a very entertaining book. It's part of a very entertaining series
