I was amazed. When I started this book I was unaware that John Costin in the story was based on John Bunyan the author of Pilgrim’s Progress and his second wife Elizabeth Bunyan. There are slow parts to this book and things I didn’t understand about the conflicts of the Puritans and Anglicans of the 1600’s England. But I’m so glad I stay with the book and story line to the finish and please listen to the Author’s note at the end. It ties up all those loose ends and unanswered questions.

He was an airhead and they’re both in desperate need for premarital counseling or basic marriage advice so that sucked. But if you like stuff that makes you cry and feel depressed then it’s written well.

Fine if you don’t mind getting depressed

I like at the end how we are told this was the story of Elizabeth Bunyan John Bunyan wife. It was a good story worth listening to.

I will admit, I hate to jump on any kind of book bandwagon, and when all my friends started raving about this book I thought-- yeah, probably not for me. But then I started reading Jody Hedlund's blog and she really knows the craft of writing and I thought...maybe I ought to give her book a read, even though there was a "bonnet" on the cover. I am so glad I read this. What an amazing story. When you start reading, you think, how can a story about a breadmaker's daughter be exciting- but the story takes off quickly and then you're hooked. This was an incredible read and I can't wait for the next book to come out.

A time in history I don't know much about, namely about the Puritans in England, but was fascinated to learn. Great story based on real people. I really enjoyed it.

Sometimes the narrator makes or breaks the audio book, and it's difficult to tell how much, in the times it falls short, is due to the immaturity of the writing and how much is due to the inability of the narrators inability to adequately portray the characters.

I thought both the author and narrator were good, but not great.

The plot and story were good, but could have been developed more, and some of the dialogue was insignificant and boring.

The narrator did not use the English accent the Characters would have spoken in, and her performance was not outstanding. When the narrator is painting the picture for you, is important to paint it well so you imagine it according to the story.

I am glad I listened to it.

Good but not greay

I enjoyed listening to this book. I felt the performance was wonderfully done. I didn't realize until the end that this book was loosely based on John Bunyun. It was a bit melancholy throughout. I didn't care for the hero much because I felt he wasn't that loving and caring toward his family. He came across very stern to me. however, he had at times exhibited some tenderness. The heroine was a saint to me. she was so good and giving and a very hard worker. I did enjoy the historical aspects of this book very much. And
The ending did turn out to be a happy ending.

I almost didn’t choose to listen to this book because of a review written by someone who didn’t finish the book. I am so glad that I did choose the book. The lead male character undergoes a transformation in the last hour of the book. Just like in our lives, God changes even believers as we are not perfect.

You must finish this book!

An amazing story based off true life characters. It only made me want to do some research as others have stated. Very hard at times with what they went through but also enlightening. Great narration and storyline!

Amazing

I caught on early that this leading character had to be John Bunyan - he’s a tinker, one beloved daughter is blind, it takes place in long-ago England…things I knew of the famous writer of Pilgrim’s Progress.
I hope that a sequel will show more of the couple’s love story after the Lord put them on the same team. Though history gives away that hardships continue, I imagine there was fulfillment and joy ahead and maybe intriguing parallels to John’s anointed allegory, written while he was imprisoned..
Ms. Hedlund makes the time period come alive, telling me more than I knew about Oliver Cromwell and King Charles 1 (& 2nd?) Puritans and Anglicans, poor and rich in England.
