About this listen

From Hollywood icon and mega-seller Jackie Collins comes a thrilling audiobook, The Power Trip, set on a state of the art luxury yacht off the coast of Cabo San Lucas.

A tropical getaway with a cast of global power-hungry elites turns sour when they find out maybe they don't control as much of the world as they thought . . .

In The Power Trip you will meet Aleksandr Kasianenko, a billionaire Russian oligarch, as he sets sail on The Bianca. You'll meet his sexy supermodel girlfriend, whom The Bianca is named after, and five dynamic, powerful, and famous couples invited on the yacht's maiden voyage: Hammond Patterson, a driven Senator, and his lovely but unhappy wife, Sierra; Cliff Baxter, a charming, never-married movie star, and his ex-waitress girlfriend, Lori; Taye Sherwin, a famous black UK footballer and his interior designer wife, Ashley; Luca Perez, a male Latin singing sensation with his older decadent English boyfriend, Jeromy; and Flynn, a maverick journalist with his Asian renegade female friend, Xuan.

You will also meet Russian mobster, Sergei Zukov, a man with a grudge against Aleksandr. And Sergei's Mexican beauty queen girlfriend, Ina, whose brother, Cruz, is a master pirate with orders to hold The Bianca and its illustrious rota of guests for ransom.

The Power Trip explorers the decadent playgrounds of the super-rich . . . and leaves you hungry for more.

Critic reviews

“All the narrators hit home runs, perfectly embodying their characters. And they all nail the requisite accents: posh and working-class British, sinister Russian, upscale and down-to-earth American, and sexy Latin. This is a great summer listen.” —AudioFile Magazine

“Collins's performance captures the titillating tone of her own brand nicely, setting the stage for the rest of the cast to apply their craft as the storyline unfolds. Poitier and Graham shine as they tackle the range of emotions and larger-than-life personalities.” —Publishers Weekly

All very exciting in their own way.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Any additional comments?

I have never wrote a review before but couldn't believe the other reviews for the book prior. I don't think some of them were reading the same book as I was. Doesn't make any sense. This was another Jackie Collins that I just couldn't put down. To me that's the first definition of a "great" read. I can't wait for the sequel. Through the years I have read most of her books. In the good old days it was reading a paperback, then came the cassette listen, the cd listen and now the audible listen. It hasn't mattered how I read them or listened to them, one thing's for sure, Jackie Collins books/reads will never disappoint. I love listening to them though. The narrator(s) always make the character's come to life in a way that reading the words and imaging the character's, just doesn't do it as much justice. "Great job" Jackie and keep them coming!!!

Fun and Entertaining

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a fun and entertaining listen with better characters and story than many of Collins' recent novels. Once the story gets going it pulls you in and doesn't let go.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Power Trip?

The reporter character and how reacts to the pirates. Very unexpected.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I wasn't a fan of the narration. In general, I don't like multiple narrators unless each person is playing a specific character. The change of narrators in this story was driven by the character taking center stage, but when the POV changed the same characters were being voiced by a different actor and the differences in style were distracting.

Any additional comments?

Overall, a very good Jackie Collins novel with less of the cookie cutter Hollywood story and characters. You could tell Collins put some time and thought into the plot and characters. Sure, there were a few of the "usual suspects": actors, models, etc.; but also some new celebrity types that made it a little more interesting. Easily one of Collins' better novels in awhile.

A Good Non-Thinker

Typical Jackie Collins, a little smutty and something you'll want to listen to for fun and entertainment, not really a thinking persons book.

Cliché Characters... Overall a Decent Beach Listen

Predictable, brainless, beach listen... Characters are VERY cliché. Typical Jackie Collins money, power, fame, sex read. Has a definite 80's vibe, ala Dynasty or Dallas.

If you are looking for something to listen to while doing chores or multi-tasking, this will do nicely... That's why I bought it. Very well narrated, overall. Jackie Collins has a bit of a lisp, which I found a bit annoying, however not enough to take away from the story. All other actors did a fantastic job, especially considering reading so many characters.

JC left an opening for a sequel, but did wrap up this story to my satisfaction, so I wasn't left waiting.

A solid 3 stars...4 stars if rated solely as a beach read.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Power Trip to be better than the print version?

The various readers. Much better than one person doing multiple voices.

An absorbing page-turner

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it to a friend, although with a warning about the numerous sex scenes. The characters and the plot are extremely well-constructed and fast paced. Classic Jackie Collins. She was a writer of the glamorous 1980s but she is up-to-date with all the social media celebrity idol worship of the current era, and the treachery of cynical individuals who parlay their social standing into self-centered notions of personal power who believe they are invincible.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the multiple readers. Contrary to some reviews I've seen here, I was not confused by the variety of vocalizations. My only issue was when the female readers tried to vocalize the Russian billionaire character during their particular scene. In one scene that was supposed to be serious, the slow intonation of the Russian accent was almost comical. I enjoyed the characters' internal perspectives, something that's missing when a book is transferred to a movie or TV screen.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

I liked Laurie, Bianca, Taye and Alexander. I even liked the way the annoying Jeremy was performed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Hammond, the hypocritical politician, moved me to anger the way he emotionally brutalized his wife, while pretending to the world with his charm and smarm, that he was a man of the people.

Any additional comments?

With a busy work schedule and family life, it's been a long time since I really became absorbed in a good fast entertaining read. This read helped get me back on my book-worm track, although it's audio. I guess in this modern era, I'll be an audio book-worm.
