About this listen

A New York Times Best Seller

From USA Today best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a “masterpiece” (Locus Magazine) of a novel about revenge, cultural identity, and the cost of breaking from tradition. Labeled “one of 2020’s buzziest horror novels” (Entertainment Weekly), this is a remarkable horror story that “will give you nightmares - the good kind of course” (BuzzFeed).

From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.

Editor's Pick

A horror revenge saga rooted in Blackfeet culture
Recommending a horror novel in a collectively dark time is a bit of a dog whistle. While many are turning to more lighthearted fare, there are those of us who will always lean into the thrill of being scared—even more so when times are tough. But though accomplished horror author Stephen Graham Jones’s hotly anticipated new novel will definitely give you the shivers, its appeal goes beyond genre fiction. Beautifully written, funny, and packed with sharp societal insight, the story follows four Blackfeet Indian men being tracked by a supernatural entity hell-bent on revenge after an elk hunt 10 years prior. Rooted in cultural identity and told from four compelling POVs (all voiced by Native performer Shaun Taylor-Corbett), this atmospheric horror packs a bloody yet literary punch. —Kat J., Audible Editor

Was so disappointed.

All these great reviews....for what? So lack luster & predictable. Not much horror to it, the few violent scenes were ok, narration was good but story just left me upset. Going to return this for sure, I don’t want to see it in my library!

Narration was challenged

While I enjoyed the narrator, he may not have been the best choice for this type of story. The fear, dread and suspense where not captured by his story telling enough times to make this book unenjoyable.

An excellent story by an insightful and powerful author

I have never had the pleasure of enjoying Mr. Jones’s work before. I started this months ago and was pulled back by a nagging need to finish it. It is graphically and viscerally satisfying. Stick around for the dedication at the end. The way in which the author thanks his team and loved ones reveals some of his inner workings while completing the book. A true artist. The narration is top notch with all the subtleties needed to ratchet the appropriate emotion at a steady pace.

So well-written and loved the narrator!

Very interesting. I don't usually read horror, but this is so well-written that it goes beyond the genre. The narrator did an excellent job.

Can’t love this enough...

I think I spent the entirety of this Audible book with my mouth hanging open. Rich description of landscape, action and character, and spot-on narration. I’ll be mulling over this book for awhile.

Captivating book made breathtaking by narration.

This is an amazing book, one that had me eagerly anticipating each next word. The narrator is excellent, providing an impressive accent that answers the questions raised by the author's description within the book.

This one is going to stick with me

This was easily the best book I’ve read/listened to this year. The narration was perfect, the imagery painted by the author captures the listener and integrates them as an observer; not just a reader. It’s definitely eerie, with elements of shock and violence that will be satisfying to those who came for the horror, but this is so much more than a scary story.
