Acerca de esta escucha

As the Congo erupts in violent rebellion in 1964, old faces and new find themselves swept into a maelstrom of danger as the United States becomes more and more deeply involved. Husbands and wives, generals, colonels, and cocksure privates find that there is now not only a new breed of soldier, but a new breed of war - sudden, savage, played by no rules ever known before. To learn it, the men of the brotherhood must risk everything, but when the summons comes, they are ready to answer the call....

Love the writing and the storyline. I like following the characters to the series of books and learning about their lives and how they unfold with history around them.

Great saga

This is the best book in the series. However, the inaccuracies in weapons calibers continues. The inaccurate hull numbers of the USS C. Turner Joy and USS Maddox was annoying.

Best of the Series

Most accounts of the military in the sixties focus on the War in Vietnam, but America was fighting against communist efforts to destabilize regimes in other parts of the world as well. One of those fights took place in the Congo—an incredibly complicated area struggling with the remains of Belgian colonialism, tribal conflict, and the aforementioned efforts by the Soviet Union and China to cause civil strife and destabilize the region. Lyndon B. Johnson didn’t want to get involved in the Congo, but he also didn’t want the region to blow up either, which is Griffin’s opening to write about espionage and Green Beret special operations in the region. It’s an exciting book, but especially interesting for focusing on a part of the world that I don’t know as much about as I would like too.

Great Sequel

if you got this far through the books then I don't need to tell you how fun it is

I enjoy this saga immensely fifth time through

While I recognize that there is such a thing as poetic license this story is more than a little beyond what such a license would allow as acceptable. But at the end of the day “The Lone Ranger and The Cavalry arrived in time to take care of the bad guys…without I might add expending too many silver bullets”. But, what the hell, even though it’s more than a little over the top, there’s enough of the primary ingredients of mystery, sex and non-stop action to make it an interesting read and thus good enough for government work…

Too Far Fetched For This Old Soldier

I assume anyone reading a review on book 7 has already read the first 6. If you haven't, I think it's a mistake to read book 7.

If you liked the first 6, you'll also enjoy the last 3 books, but frankly, I wish I hadn't read the last 3. They tarnished the overall enjoyment. The last 3 books are mostly about covert operations in the Congo and Argentina, and there is a lot of rehash and actual reprinting of excerpts from earlier books. And the number of action reports seem to continue to increase, rather than actual story-telling.

I was disappointed; it felt like the author was just trying to sell books based on the success of the first 6 books, and these were a tack-on to a series that he ended after 6 books.

My recommendation is to stop after book 6

I worried that I would like this book less given the reviews provided by many listeners, but I still found it very enjoyable despite having a new character as the primary in the story. There are tie-ins with some previous brotherhood of war characters and the story is still rich and entertaining.

Still very enjoyable

I'm ready for the next book and will be starting it as soon as I finish this line.
