About this listen

Join Gordon Alexander in Nepal as he drags his "heavy ass" over the Himalayas in this hilarious, adventure-soaked account of the Three Passes Trek, culminating in a visit to Everest Base Camp.

Together with guide Subash and porter Nima, Gordon tackles high passes in excess of 5,400 meters (17,700 feet) and explains how high altitude affects a mildly overweight road builder from sea level in the tropics. Each part of the journey brings new challenges, including sub-freezing temperatures, almost falling into a crevasse, and alarmingly warm beer.

Along the way he discovers the local Kukri Rum, traverses glaciers, interacts with eccentric and curious characters, and takes in the most beautiful views on the planet.

Contains mature themes.

Unlike Any Other Nepal Trekking Story

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. It is a well-crafted story that is excellently narrated and recorded.

One aspect that resonated with me was the uniquely Australian humor woven throughout. As an Australian myself, I may have found it particularly enjoyable for that reason. The author’s wit adds a distinctive touch, offering both laughs and moments of reflection.

The narrative offers rich insights into Nepal and the intricacies of trekking, while also providing a fun crash course in Aussie expressions and cultural nuances.

The story skillfully transitions between joy and humor to moments of tragedy and sadness, creating an engaging emotional journey. The author also vividly describes the dangers of ascending too quickly, highlighting the real risks involved.

At times, there was perhaps a bit too much detail about the quality of the food, although the anecdote about the Snickers bars was a humorous and memorable touch.

Overall, Nepali Flat is an engaging, informative, and distinctly Australian take on the adventure memoir genre.

Everyman Travels

Written from a non elite athlete perspective which made it all the more relatable and enjoyable. Great sense of the day to day feeling of travel in the region.

Excellent.

Held my attention throughout. It seems the author is realistic, open minded, curious, respectful, and compassionate. Best adventure book this year.

another guy went on a trip.

This is another memoir by a random guy. I honestly do not think this guy's story is any different than the hundreds of other tourists that do the same trip daily. There is absolutely nothing special about it. It must be self published. It has just enough observational details to give a poverty ridden, but somewhat endearing impression of his stops & trek in Nepal. But the author is so very, very negative. He hates 9 out of 10 people he meets. He takes pride in being rude & the complaints are incessant. There is no substance to this book. It's a travel log with details on everything negative. Waste of time!
