About this listen

The Message of the Prophets: Audio Lectures features 27 lessons, offering a scholarly yet student-friendly survey of the Old Testament prophetic literature that presents the message of each prophet in its historical and biblical context and then tracks that message through the New Testament to challenge listeners with what it means for them today. Old Testament scholar J. Daniel Hays focuses on synthesizing the message of the prophets, which enables students to grasp the major contours of the prophetic books clearly and concisely. After identifying what the message meant for ancient Israel, Hays helps viewers move toward application today, enabling students to gain a better understanding of God and the relationship between God and his people.

Focused on the most significant topics and discussions in the textbook, The Message of the Prophets is designed with the learner in mind. Each lecture is approximately 20 minutes. These lectures are an indispensable resource for students and independent learners alike.

Brings the Old Testament to Life

Hays' has an infectious enthusiasm that makes every chapter beam with energy and it makes listening to the chapters more engaging than I've ever experienced. For such an academic topic, it more felt refreshing to listen than I originally expected.

Great For What It Is

These lectures are exceptionally well-organized and packed with content. They track along with the book and serve as a good companion to the read.

For anyone looking to get a full, canonically-connected introduction and overview of the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible from a Christian perspective, I can’t think of a better source. J. Daniel Hays’s presentation is clear, thorough, and compelling.

What a wonderful overview!!!

The prophets can be so hard to follow or understand. These lectures greatly help to identify the setting of each prophetic writing and to clarify the audience and imagery used. I will definitely listen to this again and again. I also look forward to reading the physical book very soon to help cement the wonderful things I’ve learned in my mind.

Too Much Politics ...

Author spends too much time with the politics of Jeruselum ; ignores prophets' messages.
