Published in 1908, this is a classic thriller novel by G. K. Chesterton. The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare tells the story of an anarchist Lucian Gregory, a poet who met Gabriel Syme, a new recruit to a secret anti-anarchist taskforce at Scotland Yard. Syme meets Gregory at a party and debates with him about the meaning of poetry. Gregory argues that revolt is at the core of poetry, while Syme insists that safety and orderliness (specifically, a timetable for the London Underground) are the greatest human achievements, and suggests that Gregory isn't really serious about his anarchism. This so irritates Gregory that he takes Syme to an underground anarchist meeting place. But later in the story, Syme discovers that five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was just as mysteriously employed and assigned to defeat the Council of Days.

This book is SOO intense & confusing but in the very end it made sooo much more sense, it was basically a book that left u wondering till the very last lines!

Exceptional on several levels. It was the second time around that I realized the comparisons of today. Looking forward to it in my book club!

Confused like the detective

Hard to find words to describe a book that is surreal itself. I, like the detectives in the novel seem confounded by the efforts of Sunday but like Symes himself, am content by the journey. The allegory was beautiful, the story interesting, and while muddled in parts the ending shows it doesn’t matter as the trip itself was perhaps worth the cost. Like a don in Japanese cooking, the serving provided was complete in that it perfectly matched the tempo and culminated as perfectly as it could have. It opened with questions and ended with more but only so far as to better understand the dish just tasted.
