Acerca de esta escucha

C. S. Lewis reworks the timeless myth of Cupid and Psyche into an enduring piece of contemporary fiction in this novel about the struggle between sacred and profane love.

Set in the pre-Christian world of Glome on the outskirts of Greek civilization, it is a tale of two princesses: the beautiful Psyche, who is loved by the god of love himself, and Orual, Psyche's unattractive and embittered older sister, who loves Psyche with a destructive possessiveness. Her frustration and jealousy over Psyche's fate sets Orual on the troubled path of self-discovery.

Lewis's last work of fiction, this is often considered his best by critics.

Profound!

The best retelling of the myth of Psyche and Eros I've ever heard! And the perspective! My what depth and insight! I saw a bit of myself in Psyche's elder sister and even recognized some of my own self-deceptions! An intense and introspective listen to this book could do away with shelves full of "self-help" guides and put many a marriage counselor out of business. Put yourself in the shoes of the eldest sister and see if you do not also see yourself in her plight...Be prepared, it could be a bit painful to become so quickly enlightened, shifts in paradigms can hurt a bit.

Excellent

Would you consider the audio edition of Till We Have Faces to be better than the print version?

Yes! It was much easier to follow the audio version, especially with Nadia May's vocal distinction of the characters.

Any additional comments?

I had listened to this book read from another source and this reading by Nadia May was far superior.

Fantastic

CS Lewis was a genius; to take a pagan story and use it to transmit deep theological and ethical truths concerning what love is really like and how the beauty of the divine nature is such as to be in God’s presence is the answer to our deepest questions and the healing of our greatest hurts, while at the same time preserving the reality of the myth’s original context, is nothing short of superb. What a wonderful read that I shared with my 12 year old autistic son before going to bed at night. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Easily one of the best books I’ve ever read!!

This retelling of the story of Psyche is very colorful. Lewis can wrap the reader around his little finger. Absolutely awesome read.

Dark and bright, Woe and Wonder

definitely my favorite Lewis story. I have read it multiple times and still wonder at his insights into human nature, the human condition, and the distance between God and man. Only the fall and the cross can help us make sense of our dilemma.

Fiction to Explore definition of love

The summary says “the sacred and profane love” which sounds daunting, but please don’t be scared off.

This book is about love between people, how it expresses itself, how it holds people back, how it helps them through difficult times. It’s also about what Love looks like, and what you’re willing and unwilling to give up for it. The book moves pretty quickly (although I listened to most of it at 1.5x speed. I recommend at least 1.25x , as the narrator is good, but reads rather slowly) and doesn’t linger too much, which I liked. I think my favorite parts were the main character self reflecting on her love for her sister and what that means. Which also segues pretty nicely into the love of the unseen divine.

Reads a lot like a book on thoughts about the divine nature of love, but set to a narrative. Recommend

My Favorite!

The narrator is wonderfully creative in her use of voices and inflections to develop each character. Excellent performance!
