About this listen

Inspired by true stories, The Long March Home is a gripping coming-of-age tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the power of unrelenting hope from two New York Times bestselling authors

Jimmy Propfield joined the army for two reasons: to get out of Mobile, Alabama, with his best friends Hank and Billy and to forget his high school sweetheart, Claire.

Life in the Philippines seems like paradise—until the morning of December 8, 1941, when news comes from Manila: the Japanese have bombed Pearl Harbor. Within hours, the teenage friends are plunged into war as Japanese warplanes attack Luzon, beginning a battle for control of the Pacific Theater that will culminate with a last stand on the Bataan Peninsula and end with the largest surrender of American troops in history.

What follows will become known as one of the worst atrocities in modern warfare: the Bataan Death March. With no hope of rescue, the three friends vow to make it back home together. But the ordeal is only the beginning of their nearly four-year fight to survive.

Inspired by true stories, The Long March Home is a gripping coming-of-age tale of friendship, sacrifice, and the power of unrelenting hope.

Subtle but powerful themes

I was REALLY moved by this book. I seldom read books after listening to them, but I will read this one.

The research was impeccable, but the crisp, tight prose was even better, and I’ll remember the priests words for a long time.

An altogether great achievement that has already spurred me to buy two more of Lee’s novels.

I’m undone! Beyond Worthy Read!

I fully expect The Long March Home to be long-remembered for decades to come. Friends become brothers and take you to hell and back in a story that will bring you tears and joy and a brilliant picture of the unquenchable will to live and to love. Powerful! Unforgettable!
Too much to condense into a movie, but I could imagine a binge-worthy series.

Fantastic!

Compelling storyline. Great read! It makes me want to Keene more about the Batton Death March. The characters are engaging. The friendships are deep, the story is nearly impossible to stop listening too.

Amazing story

To take events that really happened in World War 2 and turn it into a novel through the eyes of three young friends is a gift from this author. I remember studying the war and about how young teenage boys signed up to go fight the Japanese. This book puts it in perspective, and gives us a look at what it must’ve been like for young men, leaving home, being captured, and the possibility of making at home. Absolutely one of the best audible books I have listened to. The narration was fabulous. I highly recommend this to everyone whether you listen to it or read it you will come away with emotions and know that it was a wonderful book.

Touching

Great characters & narration, so many atrocities by enemies. If only the world would learn lessons from the past.

Felt like I was watching it happen.

The Long March Home. My goodness this one hurt. The unrequited love, love between friends, and growing from boys into men. I felt the words of regret, grief, and loss. The death of Cowboy and difficulty of Jimmy and his father's relationship. The redemption, the forgiveness, the selflessness, and the love between men only forged during times like war was well and beautifully communicated. Billy's encouragement to Hank and Prop to not come back, his attempt to give his life for his best friends so that they might live. Hank and Jimmy saving each other and willingness to die for one another and love for Claire. Decisions made both right and wrong. So much loss and pain. Hank's willingness to risk and ultimately give his own life for others (43) including Jimmy is the kind of love that Christ says for which there is no greater love. War sucks. Love conquers all. Beautiful story. The men who lived and died on Bataan and Corrigidor deserve to be remembered and honored.
