About this listen

With the haunting atmosphere and emotional power of The Language of Flowers, Orphan Train, and The Light Between Oceans, critically acclaimed children's author Jean E. Pendziwol's adult debut is an affecting story of family, identity, and art that involves a decades-old mystery.

Though her mind is still sharp, Elizabeth's eyes have failed. No longer able to linger over her beloved books or gaze at the paintings that move her spirit, she fills the void with music and memories of her family, especially her beloved twin sister, Emily. When her late father's journals are discovered after an accident, the past suddenly becomes all too present.

With the help of Morgan, a delinquent teenager performing community service at her senior home, Elizabeth goes through the diaries, a journey through time that brings the two women closer together. Entry by entry, these unlikely friends are drawn deep into a world far removed from their own, to Porphyry Island on Lake Superior, where Elizabeth's father manned the lighthouse and raised his young family 70 years before.

As the words on those musty pages come alive, Elizabeth and Morgan begin to realize that their fates are connected to the isolated island in ways they never dreamed. While the discovery of Morgan's connection sheds light onto her own family mysteries, the faded pages of the journals will shake the foundation of everything Elizabeth thinks she knows and bring the secrets of the past into the light.

The Lightkeeper’s Daughters

Wonderful story. Nice having the stories told by distinctly different voices/ people. And all three were stellar performances. Highly recommend reading it. I think it’d be a great book club read. It would lend itself to some good and intense discussions.

An Excellent Story Performed Beautifully

I looked forward to listening to this every chance I could. A captivating story of family, love and hidden secrets set mostly on a lush island. Such a unique/clever story! I wish there were more books like this.

Riveting tale

This is an exceptional tale of Lake Superior and it’s light keeper of one of it’s islands. Both tragic and sweet, the story tells of twins and their family through the years and the growing up of misguided youth. I highly recommend this novel!

Glad it was an audio book

When I started this book, I wasn’t particularly entranced. For one thing, the narration by the person performing Morgan’s part, seemed artificial, and all of her sentences seemed to end as a question. I was pretty sure that I knew exactly where we were going in the book, and where it would end.

I was wrong. Part one ended where I thought the entire book would end. And then there are parts two, and part three. They were fascinated. The story was woven in narrated, with much more depth, and beauty. The plot was intriguing, and not predictable.

If I had read this as a physical book, I would’ve put it down before I even got to the end of part one. As it is, I grew to love the characters, the narrators, and the writing. I was wondering where it would go until almost the very end. I’m so glad that I stuck with this book.

And I’m even more glad that I chose to read it via audiobook.
