About this listen

First in a fast-paced historical adventure series from New York Times best-selling author Boyd Morrison and expert medievalist Beth Morrison.

England, 1351. The Pestilence has ravaged the land. Villages lie abandoned but for crows and corpses. Highways are patrolled by marauders and murderers. In these dark and dangerous times, the wise keep to themselves. But Gerard Fox cannot afford to be wise. The young knight has been robbed of his ancestral home, his family name tarnished. To regain his lands and reputation, he sets forth to petition the one man who can restore them.

Fate places Fox on the wrong road at the wrong time as he hurtles towards a chance encounter. It will entangle him with an enigmatic woman, a relic of incalculable value, and a dark family secret. It will lead him far from home and set him on a collision course with one of the most ambitious and dangerous men in Europe—a man on the cusp of seizing Christendom's highest office. And now, Fox is the only one standing in his way....

Critic reviews

"Fantastic—suspenseful and historically fascinating.... Gerard Fox could be Jack Reacher's ancestor, 700 years ago. Highly recommended!" (Lee Child, number one New York Times best-selling author of Better Off Dead)

"A thoroughly entertaining tale that I found to be exceedingly well told.... A novel full of both authenticity and thrills, and readers are sure to clamor for more from this writing duo." (Mark Greaney, number one New York Times best-selling author of The Gray Man)

"The Lawless Land is a compulsively readable, immersive tale of chivalric adventure and dangerous romance in a war-torn, plague-stricken Europe.... A hugely entertaining historical novel!" (Eric Jager, New York Times best-selling author of The Last Duel)

Got lost in it

Loved this book, completely immersive characters and great voices. Got lost in this strong female character fiction.

Good Mid-evil historical fiction

Good story. Assuming an accurate presentation of period. Narrator voice left a little to be desired

Great story and great narration.

This is a story that will keep you listening in your car after you get home. One of the best audiobooks (and book) that I have experienced.

a very enjoyable story

enjoyed the history, the action and the characters. the narrator was good with the accents, however his attempt at the female character voices grated on my nerves. however the story itself made up for the weak voices. I enjoyed the ending and will read more from these two authors.

Entertaining Medieval Adventure

This was a fun story, if you like adventure stories and the "dark ages" you'll enjoy this. A lot of other listeners have critiqued the narrator but I kind of got a kick out of his "ghoulish" French accent and hilariously terrible "female" voices, it actually added to the delightful fun of the book, but that's me. I think it would be worth a read as well as a listen and I hope the authors keep writing about these characters.

Terrific story derailed by narrator

So disappointing when a truly compelling and entertaining book meets with a narrator who makes some odd choices. I appreciate the challenges of trying to come up with distinct voices for so many characters, but the main hero comes across as weak and whiny, and the main villain sounds more like a French character out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The overall narration is excellent, but I just couldn't get past the the choice for Gerard Fox.

I freakin LOVE this book

This is my new favorite fiction book. History is one of my passions and the authors have done such an amazing job weaving historical details into this wonderful read. I first learned of The Lawless Land from a history podcast that interviewed the authors. Beth is an expert in illuminated manuscripts (if I remember correctly). Seriously, I have read A LOT of medieval fiction and this book is without equal. I was captivated from the first chapter and couldn’t wait for my daily commute to hear more. The storytelling is top notch! The narrator was great too! I sincerely hope for sequels.
