Crime-fiction master Raymond Chandler's fourth novel featuring Philip Marlowe, the "quintessential urban private eye" (Los Angeles Times)

In The Lady in the Lake, hard-boiled crime-fiction master Raymond Chandler brings us the story of a couple of missing wives - one a rich man's and one a poor man's - who have become the objects of Philip Marlowe's investigation. One of them may have gotten a Mexican divorce and married a gigolo, and the other may be dead. Marlowe's not sure he cares about either one, but he's not paid to care.

As always, Chandler is perfect. Marlowe is always the cure for what’s ailing me! If you’re reading reviews for this book, quit screwing around, and buy the damn thing already! You will enjoy it.

the twist in the story

Raymond Chandler wrote more words than we’ve ever been able to read or listen to. He’s a legend, an icon, and he’s been buried for more than sixty years. Still, he lives on through his life’s work. Each story, every word, twist and plot made into the characters that are interlaced in his books. Those books, are all excellent and like “Lady in the Lake”, keep getting better and better. Mr. Chandler took the mean streets, the elegant women and shyster, grifter men and spun them into books that literally come to life before our eyes and ears. What we see in our minds as we immerse ourselves in Philip Marlowe’s hard world of silk, chiffon and concrete fists will never leave us. That is a nearly eternal gift to you and I… from Raymond Chandler. Don’t miss the gift.

Better and Better

It is amazing how well Chandler’s novels hold up. Scott Brick’s voice is just right for Marlowe. Without giving away too much away, I think the basic plot is one mystery fans will have seen before, but there are enough twists to keep the reader thinking. The characters are nuanced, and I love the setting.

Raymond Chandler and Scott Brick

I am hooked on the Philip Marlowe series narrated by Scott Brick. While the stories are dated, Brick's style of storytelling is solid enough to make the listening very enjoyable. This is straight up crime drama without the modern author's tendencies to throw in their political bias. Chandler keeps the narrative moving forward from chapter to chapter and always finds a way to add a twist or two. Great listen and moving on to the next novel in the series.

Entertaining Marlowe Classic

I liked this one quite a bit, I especially liked the diversion into the mountains, and the early wwii references.

Well read, not overdone. The music between the chapters was a little odd, but not bad.

Good mystery

I love these recordings of the Chandler series narrated by Scott brick. If you love the old TCM films, then this series is for you.
If you are new to this author, who is a classic, understand this was written in the 40s, so there was plenty of politically incorrect dialogue. But it’s still good storytelling if you can get past that.
Where are my comments of help?

When you want entertainment

The banter between characters is clever and entertaining. Good writing and fairly good story I wanted more of a wrap up.

Great Dialogue

Started out slow, but ended up being one of my favorites from Chandler. The author is a true master at painting the scene and bringing the characters to life! 👍

Very good

Love these types of books. Marlowe is too cool and he plays chess. Kinda had this one figured out, but Chandelier threw me a curve at the end.

Dig me some Noir
