Instant New York Times Bestseller

One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of the Year

An Economist and Air Mail Best Book of the Year

""Brave and absorbing."" -- New York Times

“Alberta is not just a thorough and responsible reporter but a vibrant writer, capable of rendering a farcical scene in vivid hues.” -- Washington Post

“An astonishingly clear-eyed look at a murky movement.” -- Los Angeles Times

Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement. Through the eyes of televangelists and small-town preachers, celebrity revivalists and everyday churchgoers, Alberta tells the story of a faith cheapened by ephemeral fear, a promise corrupted by partisan subterfuge, and a reputation stained by perpetual scandal.

For millions of conservative Christians, America is their kingdom—a land set apart, a nation uniquely blessed, a people in special covenant with God. This love of country, however, has given way to right-wing nationalist fervor, a reckless blood-and-soil idolatry that trivializes the kingdom of Jesus Christ. Alberta retraces the arc of the modern evangelical movement, placing political and cultural inflection points in the context of church teachings and traditions, explaining how Donald Trump's presidency and the COVID-19 pandemic only accelerated historical trends that long pointed toward disaster. Reporting from half-empty sanctuaries and standing-room-only convention halls across the country, the author documents a growing fracture inside American Christianity and journeys with listeners through this strange new environment in which loving your enemies is ""woke"" and owning the libs is the answer to WWJD.

Accessing the highest echelons of the American evangelical movement, Alberta investigates the ways in which conservative Christians have pursued, exercised, and often abused power in the name of securing this earthly kingdom. He highlights the battles evangelicals are fighting—and the weapons of their warfare—to demonstrate the disconnect from scripture: Contra the dictates of the New Testament, today's believers are struggling mightily against flesh and blood, eyes fixed on the here and now, desperate for a power that is frivolous and fleeting. Lingering at the intersection of real cultural displacement and perceived religious persecution, Alberta portrays a rapidly secularizing America that has come to distrust the evangelical church, and weaves together present-day narratives of individual pastors and their churches as they confront the twin challenges of lost status and diminished standing.

Sifting through the wreckage—pastors broken, congregations battered, believers losing their religion because of sex scandals and political schemes—Alberta asks: If the American evangelical movement has ceased to glorify God, what is its purpose?

Filled in the gaps of my knowledge

This book resounded with me who has been seeing what’s happening with the churches for over a decade. Wake up people. I listened all night to finish. The author read well which sometimes when this happens I have been turned off. I wish he had an answer or resolution to where we are heading. I plan to re-read in the future.

The best book I read this year.

Well written, and well-argued. Tim Alberta takes on an unenviable but necessary task with wit and erudition.

Incredible relatability to the secular readers/listeners.

So glad I listened to this book! Good for you Tim. I enjoyed every chapter of this journey that he brilliantly paved the way for those who have zero knowledge or understanding of what is actually happening in the evangelical world, we’ve all been introduced to in the last few years.

Interesting insights

Alberta tells an interesting story of how some in the church are making a bad name for Christianity. I think there’s truth to this as some treat Trump like an idol but I also believe this is a minority of Christians. It’s a good book for a thought-provoking view on today’s political and religious situations.

Terrifyingly Insightful, and yet Hopeful for the Future

This is a thrilling ride through the modern history of American evangelicalism, and I daresay essential reading for anyone seeking an understanding of how, when, and why Christian-American conservatives went so f***ing crazy...

Wow..

Very well written. The Evangelicals, because They are Really NOT Wanting to Open their eyes, have Sold their SOULS to what I see as a "Movement towards the Anti-Christ". Thank you Tim for this Book! A Great Read!

I pray the church will wake up and see its idolatry.

Paul did not call on the church to overthrow emperor Nero's terribly corrupt and immoral government. The hypocrisy we have done in the US church by worshiping morally repulsive leaders and fighting the culture war in a hateful way has made the church ugly to tens of millions of young people. We, Jesus' bride, need to repent of this so we can be beautiful to Jesus and winsome to the lost. As individuals, we are commissioned in Matthew 28. But looking at Matthew 25, I do not think America will be judged as a sheep nation based on the redness of our government. What if God judges nations as He demanded of the nation of Israel in Micah 6:8? "He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"
I am not woke, but I am awake enough to know that I should expect those who are lost to live in bondage to sin. They cannot help themselves and need Jesus. He calls us to minister to the lost, the widow, the orphan, and the poor. If we truly love God more than anything else and if we truly love others as ourselves, our lives will be fruitful and many of the lost and the young will be drawn to Him who empowers us. Help all in the church to see the lies blinding so many - many of whom I believe really want to serve You Heavenly Father. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen

We are the ones in our own way!!

How easily we twist God's will be done to our will be done and believe we are righteous. This story of his journey is profoundly sad and inspiring of what honesty can bring to us. I would hope this book was put in the curriculum of Liberty University. Tank you for your frankness and your dedication to your work!

WWJD?

I grew up with a woman whose face would be on the dictionary page under "Christian." These people are so far removed from the teachings of the Gospel and the Christ. I could be much more critical, but I can see how easily these people are sucked into the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and believing lies. I am saddened that so many church leaders have become carnival barkers for the crazy. Religion has become a commodity in the US...it is all about the money and not about the Gospel. This is a brave book and I thank Alberta for bringing it to us.
