An “edge of inside” follow up to Jesus and John Wayne

I would highly recommend American Idolatry. Similar subject matter to Jesus and John Wayne but with a social scientist’s expertise, an evangelical’s personal reflections, and a hope-filled plan for actionable redemption from the throes of white Christian nationalism. I’m a Latter-day Saint, we have our own particular brand of burden in this regard. This book renewed my faith in the potential for change and made me want to be a part of it.

Excellent & Much Needed

This book is a must read for Christians, especially in the US. The author makes a clear case about the dangers of Christian Nationalism.

Timely!

This work could not have come at a better time! With precision and social science skill, Whitehead names the idols lurking in the American church that has existed unaddressed for decades. A quick your through scripture and the repeated warnings of idolatry of Gods people, it should be normal and natural to consider how idolatry may exist in any church. His particular focus on the American church should create a pause for practitioners, pastors, ministry leaders, and leadership structures.

Truth and Hope

Clearly defines Christian Nationalism, and it’s detriment to those privileged and harmed by it. Offers a call for reeducation, remediation, and reform in a time when healing from this plague is so desperately needed.

Inspiring & clarifying

This book crystallizes the ways in which we, as Christians, have mistakenly built an identity around power. It urges us to turn away from power seeking by reminding us our Christian identity is found by laying down our power as Christ did and actively seeking justice for the oppressed rather than privilege for ourselves.

About time!

Finally a voice from a Christian evangelical who recognizes the hypocrisy & misguidedness of so many Christian nationalists.
