About this listen

Long before Prefect Marcus Venandus directed the defense of the Jeweled Hills, Green Vigil Marcus led his first command into the treacherous jungles of Ekángá.

As if the jungle itself wasn’t deadly enough, native warriors and shamans strike from its shadows with magic, spears, and darts, while the forcibly transplanted Graeci population seethes with unrest in the supposedly civilized regions of the province.

Deep in the jungle, young Marcus is about to discover how little lycee combat exercises have to do with surviving the Jungles of Ekángá.

A really fun read.

I really enjoyed this one. It reads like one of those classic pulp adventures almost, just a fun light read. Will Hahn gives it that classic twist with his deep voice, it reads like a classic radio drama. This was really fun, and I can't wait to read more of Mr Stack's work.

Awesome prequel!

Already listened to books 1-9 of legionnaire and it’s so good! This was fun to find after already getting to know Marcus and Severus. Hopefully the rest of series gets narrated soon!

In the beginning...

I’ve followed the Legionnaire Chronicles starring Marcus Venandus from Lesser Tribune to Prefect and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now we get to see how Marcus’ career started in his first command as a Green Vigil. Marcus and half of his command of twenty men are sent to the Jungles of Ekángá to determine the fate of Tamaius, a trader who lived in the jungle, and friend of Pro Consul Pontious. Marcus was not prepared for the jungle. His training did not cover such a wild and treacherous environment. What they found was both horrific, and curious. Magic and alchemy appeared to be at the root of the findings. Further strange occurrences would follow. The story took some unpredictable twists and turns but it was interesting and held my attention to the end. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
