About this listen

Unique to this title is:

  • A study of the themes present in White Fang

You may of course skip it and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers and come back later to the beginning.

Jack London was born in San Francisco in 1876, as John Griffith Chaney. He was an illegitimate child of Flora Wellman and William Chaney. When Chaney refused to marry Flora Wellman, she tried to kill herself. She survived, but refused to take care of the baby. So, London was raised by an African-American woman and a former slave. His mother later married a man named John London, and that is probably how his surname changed to London.

White Fang is the story of a wolf dog that is rescued from its brutal owner and gradually becomes domesticated through the patience and kindness of its new owner, Weedon Scott. White Fang eventually defends Scott's father from attack by an escaped convict.

Circumstances right now prevent me from writing an extensive review. I will update my review as soon as I am able. I love the added content by the producers.

There's a Reason It's a Classic

It's wonderful to fall back into the cold, harsh world of Jack London for a time. His works remain timeless treasures to be discovered by each generation. Even though some societal elements of his day no longer ring true, and our knowledge of wolves and pack behavior has changed, the story at its essence remains so true to human nature as to have rightly earned its place among the classics.

White Fang is a survivor's story. It's the story of one who would pick himself up time and time again, adjust his mindset to his circumstances, and find a way to endure at all cost. It's a brutal, visceral tale and not for anyone who gets upset at the thought of an animal in pain. One thing White Fang knows is pain. What he's never known is love, kindness, or gentleness... until he meets Weedon Scott. This Jack London novel is a raw and beautiful tale of the indomitable force of love.

This particular audiobook is well done, with a high-energy narration appropriate to the story. The annotations are also nice, but can be skipped if the listener has no interest.
