About this listen

Charlotte Dean enjoys nothing more than the solitude of her London flat and the monotonous days of her work at a travel bookshop. But when her younger sister unceremoniously bursts into her quiet life one afternoon, Charlotte's world turns topsy-turvy.

Beloved author D. E. Stevenson captures the intricacies of post-World War I England with a light, comic touch that perfectly embodies the spirit of the time. Alternatively heartbreaking and witty, The Young Clementina is a touching tale of love, loss and redemption through friendship.

Beautifully and evocatively read.

A simple story, of real people, living at a time when honesty, integrity and loyalty were not only valued, but lived in every day interactions and the cost and far reaching impact on others, when these virtues were sacrificed for personal gain.

Why isn't this a Classic?

I have listened to several earlier works by this author, and for the most part I enjoyed them. This story is one of her earlier novels and it is positively great, REALLY great! I'm usually more eloquent in my reviews, but all I can say is that this is one of the most engrossing, well written and wonderful novels I have read. I'm 63 and have been reading since I was a kid.

I have enjoyed several of the Author's much later books, but they can't compare to the power of this earlier work. I'm very glad Audible has a few more possible gems from early in her career I can look forward to listening to.

A simpler time

Another lovely book from DE Stevenson. The story is totally predictable ( no plot twists here ) and the main character, Char, is so naive at times that I wanted to shake her. But I loved this sweet, lovely story where all ends well. Karen Cass is a perfect narrator for this very British story.

A lovely read of D.E. Stevenson ~

SO happy to find this on Audible as I've been asking for more D.E. Stevenson titles. It is a cozy type book with great characters and the narrator did a wonderful job. Please add more!

The young clementina

The narrator was perfect - a story of courage and honor;of maintaining integrity in the most difficult of circumstances - I like Char very much; After part two I couldn't stop listening.

Miss Dean's Dilemma

The original US title of this novel was Miss Dean's Dilemma, which I feel fits the book better than The Young Clementina. It is one of the more challenging of D. E. Stevenson's novels, dealing with some complex issues, including Shell Shock (what World War I called what is now referred to as Traumatic Stress Syndrome or other names), divorce, etc.

But, all in all, it is the story of Charlotte Dean and her niece Clementina, two brave and honorable young women doing the best that they can to deal with some difficult situations.

And, as in all of D. E. Stevenson's novels, the result is a happy ending.

I had never before listened to anything read by Karen Cass, but I feel that she did a very outstanding job of giving a voice to this challenging and fulfilling novel.

Good Narration

It’s predictable and unsophisticated appropriate for 12 year olds. The main charter had too many inconsistencies that rang false. Especially concerning her absence from the supposed titled name.
