About this listen

From best-selling horror author L.V. Pires comes a Gothic suspense story that tells the terrifying tale of one woman's descent into madness.

Thirty-three-year-old Anne Towry is a woman who knows little about herself and even less about her family. Sent away from Whitehall Manor when she was only ten years old, Anne struggles to make sense of her life. When she receives an urgent phone call from a Dr. Cornish informing her that her mother, Seraphine, has gone missing, Anne returns to her childhood home in an attempt to figure out what went wrong.

Arriving at Whitehall Manor changes everything for Anne. The longer she stays, the more immersed she becomes in the haunting beauty of the Marigold Garden. When she finds Seraphine’s journal she is shocked as page after page reveals bone-chilling confessions including a retelling of the night her family was changed forever. Unraveling the truth comes with a price when the true terror of a decade’s old family secret threatens to pull Anne deeper into the horror of the Towry family curse.

It’s OKAY to despise a terrible parent 🤨

Gets a bit ghastly but overall great story, great work.

I’ll be continuing to volume II…

the haunting of whitehall manor

I didn't really connect to the narrators voice like I do in alot of books. I think it lacked something. The book was decent. I will be continuing with the series. It did draw me in eventually but it took a bit of time. This was my first book by L.V. Pires.

Great story terrible performance

The person who read this book had a very monotone voice and several times words were mispronounced. It may not bother you like it did me, but if it does power through it’s worth it.

Haunting read

The Haunting of Whitehall Manor is a super engaging and spooky novel that mixes mystery and supernatural horror really well. The author does a great job of creating a creepy vibe that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

The characters are fleshed out nicely, and their interactions add a lot to the story, making the haunting feel very real. Each character has their own unique take on the mystery, and their backstories fit seamlessly into the main plot. The main character's journey is especially interesting as they deal with both personal and external challenges, adding more layers to the story.

While the plot is full of twists and turns, some parts might be a bit predictable if you're a fan of the genre. But honestly, that doesn't take away from the fun of the story. The author keeps things exciting with well-timed suspense and a few surprises that keep you on your toes.

One of the best things about the book is how it explores themes like loss, redemption, and how the past affects the present. These themes are cleverly tied into the ghostly happenings, adding more emotional depth to the story. The pacing is just right, with moments of quiet tension building up to some really chilling climaxes.

The book isn't just about spooky stuff; it also digs into the psychological aspects of fear and how it affects the characters.
In conclusion, it is a really enjoyable read and a great pick for any horror fan. It offers the perfect mix of creepy atmosphere, well-developed characters, and an engaging plot that will keep you hooked from the first page to the last.

Eh.

Wasn’t my cup of tea. The main character was frustrating, the writing was repetitive, and the performance was lackluster.

Better story than narrator

The narrator sounded like a 12 year old reading a story. The audio kept going in and out too. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book. It was a slow starter but picked up speed about 1/3 of the way in. Creepy story. Creepy house. Creepy characters. The suspense was there and it certainly kept you guessing. I guessed one part of the story towards the end, but otherwise was surprised. There are some triggers in the story regarding abuse and mental health, so be warned. Worth listening to.

I received a copy of this audiobook from StoryOrigin and this is my honest review.

Was the narrator 13?

The story was fine, a bit unbelievable towards the end and super dragged out. But the narrator completely took me out of this story and made it extremely difficult to listen to.

A Gothic Horror Story

This was my first experience with L. V. Pires' work. The story started out slow and stayed that way until almost the middle of the book. Eventually the story grabbed my attention, and then it didn't let go. I think the characters lacked emotional depth as I didn't really connect with any of them. I liked the surprising twists near the end. Mackenzie Welz's narration was fine as her diction was clear, but her voice lacked expressiveness. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Very amatuerish writing

A decent story that needed a much better writer. The dialog between the characters is something I would expect from a story written but a junior high student. I really don't understand how this got so many good reviews...
while the writing wasn't the best, the narration killed any chance this had at being enjoyable. If I could have given it zero stars I would have.

Editor Wanted

Who: This Book
What: Seeking competent editor for disjointed, novel-length gothic-ish story. Like, badly in need of an editor. I mean, I'd do it, but it seems like it should've been done already? There's promise here-- it's a good premise-- but seriously how did this pass through the editorial process? Now I have to listen to the next two books because I'm not a quitter, and I'm already mad about it.
