About this listen

No one - fictional or factual - embodies the Jazz Age as completely as F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby. First published in 1925, this legendary novel continues to enthrall generations as it serves as a lens to view our not-so-distant past. Many of our notions about that period are taken from this book. Bathtub gin, flappers, and house parties that last all week enliven Fitzgerald's classic tale. Stylish and engaging, The Great Gatsby is also a startling literate portrait of Gatsby's search for meaning in his opulent world.

With his sharp social insight and breathtaking lyricism, Fitzgerald stands out as one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. Frank Muller's timeless interpretation enhances the imagery of Gatsby's stylish and unfulfilling world with brilliance and insight beyond the printed word.

This was a short story, but an entertaining story. I feel it worth the time.

I liked pretty much everything about this book and the way it was read, I recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this story, and really appreciated the way it was told.

This version from 1997 is the only version you need to experience. The characters voices are expertly delivered with enough differentiation to help through dialogues yet all still connected to the reader’s own delivery. I can’t recommend this over other other versions enough.

The Gold Standard

I’ve tried four other audio versions of this book over the years, but this is the only one worth listening to. I’ve listened to it a dozen times and never get tired of the novel or the performance.

I was looking for audio version of The Great Gatsby and had already heard Frank Muller’s mindblowingly good reading of Moby Dick, so this was a no-brainer.

Fitzgerald’s prose is truly incredible, he’s a god-tier stylist. I saw some people complaining in their reviews that not enough happens (which is patently not true) but it’s so much more than that - it’s a diamond-sharp character study, brought fully to life by Frank Muller’s stunning narration.

I cannot recommend this enough. Treat yourself and luxuriate in Fitzgerald’s language.

A classic recording of a classic book

F. Scott Fitzgerald. A giant for all time. This is more than a great story. It’s a poem and a metaphor of life wherever one lives. The reader, Frank Muller, can’t be equaled. He has the authority and sensitivity of the narrator. I’m so happy it’s in my library so I can listen many more times.

A must read —- over and over

I originally was forced to read this book in High School 65 years ago. I really didn't learn much

This time I have read it because I wanted to read it and learned so so much more. somethings I should have learned 65 years ago.

So Much Better Now Then Before

What a masterful writer was F. Scott Fitzgerald. Descriptive passages in the hands of lesser writers nearly always deteriorate into annoying purple prose as these wannabes grope for ever more fanciful $10 words and phrasing; they should leave it to those rare experts who have the gift of writing in their bones. (With thanks to Ernest Hemingway who started the housecleaning revolution with his spare prose.)

My personal opinion is that this novel is vastly overrated in the lexicon of American literature; however, it remains an engaging tale of rich people with too much time and too much money to lead meaningful lives.

Frank Muller's narration is, as always, outstanding. We continue to feel his loss.

This is a literary masterpiece. No one can go through life without reading it. Genius book with an amazing narrator to match. The narrator did a fantastic job acting out the characters and even did accents.

Masterpiece!
