About this listen

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Alex Kershaw, New York Times bestselling author of Against All Odds, returns with an utterly immersive, adrenaline-driven account of D-Day combat.

“Meet the assaulters: pathfinders plunging from the black, coxswains plowing the whitecaps, bareknuckle Rangers scaling sheer rock . . . Fast-paced and up close, this is history’s greatest story reinvigorated as only Alex Kershaw can.”—Adam Makos, New York Times bestselling author of Spearhead and A Higher Call

Beginning in the predawn darkness of June 6, 1944, The First Wave follows the remarkable men who carried out D-Day’s most perilous missions. The charismatic, unforgettable cast includes the first American paratrooper to touch down on Normandy soil; the glider pilot who braved antiaircraft fire to crash-land mere yards from the vital Pegasus Bridge; the brothers who led their troops onto Juno Beach under withering fire; as well as a French commando, returning to his native land, who fought to destroy German strongholds on Sword Beach and beyond. Listeners will experience the sheer grit of the Rangers who scaled Pointe du Hoc and the astonishing courage of the airborne soldiers who captured the Merville Gun Battery in the face of devastating enemy counterattacks. The first to fight when the stakes were highest and the odds longest, these men would determine the fate of the invasion of Hitler’s fortress Europe—and the very history of the twentieth century.

The result is an epic of close combat and extraordinary heroism. It is the capstone Alex Kershaw’s remarkable career, built on his close friendships with D-Day survivors and his intimate understanding of the Normandy battlefield. For the seventy-fifth anniversary, here is a fresh take on World War II's longest day.

Praise for The First Wave:

“Masterful... readers will feel the sting of the cold surf, smell the acrid cordite that hung in the air, and duck the zing of machine-gun bullets whizzing overhead. The First Wave is an absolute triumph.”—James M. Scott, bestselling author of Target Tokyo

“These pages ooze with the unforgettable human drama of history's most consequential invasion.”—John C. McManus, author of The Dead and Those About to Die

Critic reviews

“[A] fast-paced tale . . . Kershaw is at his evocative best describing the chaos, courage, and carnage of combat, vividly portraying the bravery of the ‘greatest generation.’ Even readers well-read on the subject will enjoy this perspective.”Publishers Weekly

“The reader looking for inspirational accounts of what it took to win the day—especially in its very first hours—will find Kershaw as compelling as ever. . . . This new history of the twentieth century’s most momentous day belongs on any history lover’s bookshelf.”—The Roanoke Times

“Compelling . . . Kershaw puts events ranging from the humorous to the heartbreaking into context against the backdrop of an operation so large it almost defies comprehension.”—Army magazine

The First Wave

Riveting first hand accounts of D-Day survivors. A good cross section of American, British and Canadian veterans that were there.

Awesome book. Learned a ton. Amazing courage by the U.S. and British troops. We owe all of them and their families a HUGE debt of gratitude.

superb!

One of my most favorite books on D-Day. Its like watching the movie "The Longest Day" but a lot more detailed. Kershaw's work here covers the amazing and courage that men of the first wave of French, British, Canadian, & Americans portrayed in the first landings on the Normandy beaches and the paratroopers & commandos that parachuted in behind the beaches on the morning of June 6, 1944. such a heart gripping read filled with detail! I've read my hard cover twice and have just finished the audible here. It's fantastic!

Great read

Some reviewers critique this book as not history. They are wrong. D-Day is said to be the most important day of the 20th century. On this day began the salvation of the free world as we still know it. This is the personal stories and history of some of the people who did their duty in unspeakable circumstances to save our world. In the end we are admonished to maintain vigilance to preserve that freedom. Their experience is a warning to not repeat their sacrifice. It is an important history lesson.

This book, like many others, makes me realize why it is the greatest generation

This book, like many others, make me realize why this is and always will be the greatest generation. It is very difficult to think that today’s generation would ever be able to give up everything to save the world.
Great book!!!!

Great Book

I found myself going back to this audiobook repeatedly as I found a captivating.
I can hardly believe we’re coming up on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. I pray we don’t squander the freedoms that these brave souls fought for. Thanks again.
