About this listen

Crime fiction readers know Quarry - the ruthless killer for hire from Max Allan Collins' acclaimed novels - but where did Quarry's story start? For the first time ever, the best-selling author of Road to Perdition takes us back to the beginning, revealing the never-before-told story of Quarry's first job: infiltrating a college campus and eliminating a professor whose affair with one of his beautiful, young students is the least of his sins.

This reminded me of the old M. Spalain books

This is one of THE best mystery books i have read in years...the sarcasm and addressing the reader is a unique touch...the story is excellent and the performance is superb

Small doses

I really enjoy this series. Collins’ writing is witty, stories are engaging. But good god I can only take Rudnicki’s gravel, harsh voice just so long. Usually like to “binge” a good series so not to forget what’s happened in past books. I just can’t take the vocal fry,my throat actually starts to hurt. He can sound great an octave or so higher doing other voices. Tends to do Quarry even deeper, not pleasing to listen to after couple hours.

Getting to know Quarry

After listening to the entire Nathan Heller series, I decided to give this Quary series a shot, mainly via the Audible Plus catalog. This isn't the first Quarry I listened to, so I was a bit surprised when I read that this book, #8,, named the First Quary was actually his first official hit as a hit man. Why was this #8? I don't know but I'll go with it, I guess a series doesn't have to be in chronological order. But there you have it.

The book itself was a fun listen. Action packed from the start. For what seemed like a simple hit there were lots of twists and turns for Quary to get through on his way to the final resolution. Quite the story.

I'll be back for more.

PS I'm an Iowa alum, which is in Iowa City and the setting for most of this story. I've eaten in the establishments the author brings up and they were all good, some are still there.

The First Quarry

Great novel by Max Allan Collins and great performance by Stefan. As you can tell by the title this is Quarry’s first contract under the broker. It involves Quarry doing a stakeout of a college professor to get back a manuscript. All sorts of twists and turns follow. It is one of my favorite Quarry adventures.

It was entertaining to hear Quarry's first job.

I like the way some of the original Quarry books have become period pieces, while others like The First Quarry subtly self aware if being period pieces. Collins is always an entertaining writer.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this one!

This one is another superbe Quarry novel.
It was nice to hear how all began. And Stephan Rudnicki narrates the series absolutely perfect.

Hopefully, Max Allan Collins continues with the series.
