Historia
It was all too frighteningly familiar. For the second time in his life, Alex Penn wakes up in an alcoholic daze in a cheap hotel room off Times Square and finds himself lying next to the savagely mutilated body of a young woman. After the first death, he was convicted of murder and imprisoned, then released on a technicality. But this time he has to find out what happened during the blackout and why, before the police do.

It's the summer of '74 . . . Richard Nixon has resigned from office, CB radios are the hot new thing, and in the great state of Texas two cousins hatch a plan to drive $1 million worth of stolen weed to Idaho, where some lunatic is gearing up to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered motorcycle. Historia
A group of criminals in 1946 pull off the heist of the century, stealing a dozen priceless works of art from a Boston museum. But while the thieves get caught, the art is never found. Forty years later, the last surviving thief gets out of jail and goes hunting for the loot, involving some innocent college students in his dangerous plan—and twenty-eight years after that, in the present day, the former college kids, now all grown up, are drawn back into danger as the still-missing art tempts a deadly new generation of treasure hunters.

Historia
Quarry doesn't kill just anybody these days. He restricts himself to targeting other hitmen, availing his marked-for-death clients of two services: eliminating the killers sent after them, and finding out who hired them…and then removing that problem, as well. So far he's rid of the world of nobody who would be missed. But this time he finds himself zeroing in on the grieving family of a missing cheerleader. Does the hitman's hitman have the wrong quarry in his sights?

Historia
Al Engel had worked his way up to being Nick Rovito’s right-hand man, near the top of the syndicate. And this was a delicate job that Rovito had given him: retrieving a very important jacket, loaded with heroin, from the fresh grave of the drug mule who was accidentally buried wearing it. There was just one problem (at least - just one to begin with): It turned out the grave was empty. Suddenly Engel was the one finding himself “in deep”.

The men in the tan-and-cream Chrysler came with guns blazing. When Ray Kelly woke up in the hospital, it was a month later, he was missing an eye, and his father was dead. Then things started to get bad. From the mind of the incomparable Donald E. Westlake comes a devastating story of betrayal and revenge, an exploration of the limits of family loyalty and how far a man will go when everything he loves is taken from him.

Somebody stole it from its museum home in South America and smuggled it through U.S. Customs in a shipment of plastic imitations. But the wrong one got delivered, and the million dollar statue, mixed with the fifteen copies, is somewhere in New York.

Red Harvest, which was originally published in four issues of Black Mask from November 1927 to February 1928, is acclaimed as one of the essential detective novels, giving birth to a darker turn than classic great detectives such as Sherlock Holmes. Drawing from his personal experiences as an operative with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, Hammett portrays a dark, violent world full of gangsters, corrupt cops, and flawed detectives hired to clean up the place. André Gide called Red Harvest "a remarkable achievement, the last word in atrocity, cynicism, and horror."

Best in a long time
Most enjoyable listen in quite awhile. Fun story, great narration with the right tone and irreverence. Innocent bystander caught up in mystery and murder type story. No politics or anything to break the mood. Anyway, if touting the mood for a good fun easy story I highly recommend.

Another good yard by Westlake.
Hard case crime rarely disappoints. Another good yarn by Westlake. Stephen Thorne does a great job with Westlake’s Richard Stark Parker series but I liked his performance here even better.

Good Story and Excellent Author
It’s very rare that the narrator makes the book come alive but Stephen Thorne has pulled it off. He captivated you from start to finish and adds the right touches of humor in the dialogue. I will look for more works from both the narrator and author.

Very entertaining
Very solid murder mystery in a semi-tongue-in-cheek style. First person narrative by cabbie Chet, shortly partnered with sexy blond Abbie. I give very high marks for the lack of gapping plot holes or even tiny ones. All the clues are there for reader to speculate who done it. The writing is lively. No sadistic murders of young women for a welcome change.
Highly recommended.
