About this listen

In The Fence My Father Built, when legally separated Muri Pond, a librarian, hauls her kids, teenage Nova and 11-year-old Truman, out to the tiny town of Murkee, Oregon, where her father, Joe Pond, lived and died, she’s confronted by a neighbor’s harassment over water rights and Joe’s legacy: a fence made from old oven doors. The fence and accompanying house trailer horrify rebellious Nova, who runs away to the drug-infested streets of Seattle. Muri searches for her daughter and for something to believe in, all the while trying to save her inheritance from the conniving neighbor who calls her dad Chief Joseph. Along with Joe’s sister, Aunt Lutie, and the Red Rock Tabernacle Ladies, Muri must rediscover the faith her alcoholic dad never abandoned in order to reclaim her own spiritual path.

Love this story

This story is about Native Americans in eastern Oregon. However, they could have been anywhere in the U.S. The White man still pushes the Indians down and make them live in terrible reservations. The story tells how Miri has to fight to save sacred ground from the white man by herself. This is a great story.

Was okay!

The story was good in the sense of greed, love, deception, and family, but it was heavy on religion.
Narration was okay

Took a bit to love

I did love this book by the time I finished it. I didn’t think I would when I first started it because it didn’t capture me up like other books but the message was clear and the story did eventually capture me. A good read.

Ok to listen to

Good as far as the faith part of this but the writer seems to feel it is ok to be totally self centered and pushy.

Perfect balance of characters & action

I was wondering about this one based on the title—but it totally fit the story. The book was a great balance of loss, pain, evil, love & faith. Muri’s character was believable and well developed thru the story, and her children, funny aunt and uncle they were suddenly living with set a great backdrop for humor but also the pain of processing losing the father she never knew, her divorce, and then the fight for her father’s land—but most of all, his character. The evil neighbor gave the tension to the story, as well as her daughter’s flight, which is a mother’s worst nightmare. There was romance, but done well and didn’t override the story. Her faith journey was honest and also humorous. The writer’s descriptions of people, events, places has you chuckling and wanting more.
Highly recommend this audio (great narration), and will be seeking out more of this author’s work.
