About this listen

1332 A.D. - As the premier commander for Roger Mortimer, Earl of March, when he commandeered the throne from a young Edward III, Sir Mathias de Reyne is the type of knight that all men aspire to be: fair, powerful, intelligent, and bold. Men on both sides of the Mortimer/Edward lines respect and admire de Reyne for his outstanding character, including Dragonblade himself, Tate de Lara. Before the war separated men into two groups - those that supported Mortimer and those that supported the rightful king - Mathias, Tate, Kenneth St. Hever, and Stephen of Pembury were inseparable friends. But then, sides were chosen and lines were drawn.

When Roger Mortimer lost his head, Mathias de Reyne was spared because of his great and fair reputation. Stripped of his lands and titles, however, he was forced into obscurity. He became known in legend as The Fallen One. More than a year after being stripped of his knighthood, Mathias now makes his living as a blacksmith in the north Cumbrian town of Brampton. One morning, he hears cries for help and, being an innately brave and helpful man, follows the cries and comes upon a terrible scene. Rescuing a young woman from a fiend, he very quickly realizes that the young woman is the most beautiful he has ever lain eyes upon.

The Lady Cathlina de Lara is a lush beauty with dark hair and flashing dark eyes, and the attraction between the pair is immediate. But she is also a de Lara, related to the man who took Mathias' titles from him - his former best friend. Still, he cannot forget the dark-eyed beauty and soon finds himself swept up in a wildly passionate love affair, breaking his promise to never bear arms again by resuming his knighthood without the permission of the king and fleeing to Scotland. From the brutal Scots borderlands to the fields of Dupplin Moor and a historic battle, join Mathias and Cathlina as their journey in life takes them on a passionate adventure of love, life, learning, and the redemption of the man once known as The Fallen One.

I love Dragonblade series \ O /

The House of De Lara is one my favourites and to hear Tate and Toby with all their friends reunited in this one book is absolutely amazing.

Thank you Tim Campbell for consistent performance throughout KLV's Dragonblade series. Your brilliant narration breathed an added dimension to the epic medieval arc.

Pretty good

This one was pretty good and fast-moving. Mathias de Reyne was loyal and a good knight. Because he was loyal to his family member he loses everything and must start life over after the loss of land and title. He stays strong and is able to redeem himself with the king others think he betrayed by standing with his family. He meets and falls for his old friends' sister and works his way back to his previous level of respect with family, friends, and the king.

An exciting story in audiobook!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes I would highly recommend this audiobook. The story is highly exciting and interesting of a guy the hero Mathias who loses everything especially his knighthood by being a blacksmith but due to the love and help of a woman the heroine Cathlina who doesn't care who or what he is. Mathias is able to redeem and believe in himself by becoming a knight again. I loved the story and have purchased both the ebook and the paperback to have the audiobook is just wonderful!

What does Tim Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really liked Mr. Tim Campbell's narration of the book and thought he did a wonderful job with the book. His voice moved and flowed with the emotions while listening to the book. He was also able to bring distinction and different intonations to every single male character including the hero Mathias and the heroine Cathlina even all the female characters too!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No I like to listen several times to audiobooks especially when I love the book. Yes at times I didn't want to stop listening to it getting caught up in the story but then to go back to it was just as nice.

Any additional comments?

There are some similar characters that Ms. Le Veque writes about in the dragonblade trilogy so to listen to those books just for the similar characters and their friendships is good but really this is a stand-alone book and well worth it to listen to maybe adding it to those books as well!

I am a huge fan of Kathryn Le Veque's Medieval romance! So when I started to read her book THE FALLEN ONE, I got trapped the moment I started to read it. She has done it again, I got captivated by Sir Mathias de Reye and the Lady Cathlina de Lara's love story. It had everything a fan of Medieval needs love, passion and adventure. Ms. Le Veque is an excellent writer and I love her style of writing, her words flow, so it is easy to become addicted to her books. I love all her medieval romances and I highly recommend them. Absolutely Fantastic!

What did you love best about The Fallen One?

I loved the story of redemption, love, loyalty, and bravery in a time of chivalry and honor. Mathias and Cathlina, their families and the knights of the Dragonblade trilogy reunited made for an adventure to savor. Tim Campbell's performance as narrator was perfect! He brought to life each character in such a wonderful way, I felt as if I were sitting in a theater as an audience member of a terrific production.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Midgie made me laugh. as did the reactions to those around her. Her character was a wonderful addition to the story. I also loved the knights of Dragonblade, as they faced the enemy again.

What about Tim Campbell’s performance did you like?

His voice was perfect. He not only enunciates well, his slight accent brings to mind the era of which he speaks. He treats each character with a different voice, in a way that is not exaggerated, but subtle enough that you immediately know which character is speaking at each moment. He literally acted the entire novel out himself! It was terrific.

If you could take any character from The Fallen One out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I believe it would be a toss up between Tate de Lara's wife "Toby" because of the way her character has been written as a well educated, strong willed woman and Keir St. Hever because of his sense of humor. Either would make for interesting dinner conversation.

Any additional comments?

I loved the story when I read it as a book, and as an audiobook it was even better. Tim Campbell did a terrific job with the story, he was AMAZING, and I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the historical romance.

Dragonblade Continues to Excel

Once agalin Kathryn Le Veque has put some herself. THE FALLEN ONE, a sequel to the DRAGONBLADE series, does nor disappoint, in fact it exceeds all expectation. With the De Reyne family as the main characters, we are given a chance to see a family in disgrace essentially bring themselves out of the poverty level of existence through pain, loss, war, fire and destruction to a future they never really believed was possible. Tears are probable, happiness is assured in this exciting book that is narrated by the wonderful Tim Campbell, who never disappoints. Thank you both for a page turner that kept me up all night. I couldn't put it down!

Great!

Mathias de Reyne is a good man, just on the wrong side. The story makes you feel deeply for him and you want him to be successful. The way his relationship starts with Cathlina is nice and the story makes you anticipate what will happen since she is a DeLara. So the excitement begins.
