Publisher's summary

“I can’t juggle starships. I make the ones who can.”

The battle with the Iron Legion has left The Last Horizon battered and broken, drifting in space. Varic needs an exceptional engineer to fix his ship, and there’s only one person for the job: Mell, the master Aether technician.

But first, they have to break her out of prison.

Mell has been captured by the Advocates, a group of superpowered vigilantes who dominate their corner of the galaxy. They are led by Starhammer, an invincible champion with a personal obsession with Mell.

The Last Horizon may be crewed by the greatest heroes in the galaxy, but even they have to be careful with Starhammer. Every time he survives a battle, he grows stronger.

In another life, Varic saw the end of that road. If he lets Starhammer become too powerful, the galaxy is doomed.

The Engineer is Book Two in a planned six-book series.

pretty good sequel

right up front I'm simply going to say that I recommend this story to anybody reading this review. the narrator is top-notch and I've never seen him deliver less than a fantastic performance. the writing is amazing all the way around. I kind of jumped into this story blind because I had really enjoyed the author's cradle series and was looking for more of that type of storytelling. if you haven't bought into the store yet then really all you need to know is that it is set in a Sci-Fi futuristic universe coupled with fantasy magics. our main character went through a Magic Ritual akin to bleeding edge technology that resulted in him living six lifetimes where he unfortunately died brutally every time. in this his presumably final life he is attempting to avoid his fate and prevent the tragedy waiting to befall the universe from multiple evildoers and well-meaning Endeavors gone awry. I was thoroughly entertained and I eagerly await the next entry. lastly, I want to say Well done to everybody who had a hand in bringing this story to us, the audiobook listeners.

A weird fun ride

This series is so strange. One of Will Wight's strong suits, in my opinion, is that his plots are super sharp. There is no wasted space, no areas you want to skip, and typically just very well thought out and well put together. This book, and the Captain, both feel like messes compared to his other work. The jokes feel like the characters are looking at a camera smiling, stuff just happens, cause it has to. It feels dramatically less satisfying, on a narrative level, compared to his Cradle series. And yet, man, it's still a really fun listen. I don't know what else to say about it. The fights are cool, the magic makes no sense, and I was totally entertained the whole time. Buy this, it's fun, and most books aren't as good as it is. I do hope future books are a little more crisp, but honestly I'm fine either way.

The crew comes together!

Another fun ride. I can't wait to see what they comes next now that Horizon is a full strength. The only thing that would have made it better is to have some Black Flame in the bloopers.

Starhammer

I really liked the first book, but I feel like this one took it up notches. The story has gotten much more compelling and the characters are just amazing! I love how Mel struggles to fit in but finally finds her place among the crew.
