About this listen

Here’s a true diamond of historical fiction that's waited 300 years to be told.

History and legend remember many pirate stories and captains - but until now not the true story about the pirate crew who seized the most valuable treasure hoard ever taken on the high seas! In the year 1721, a British pirate captain named John Taylor, accompanied by a French captain nicknamed The Buzzard, seized the richest single booty ever to come into pirate hands. Taylor and his crew of mutineers took a treasure so valuable it would have taken almost 50,000 years to earn as honest sailors. The value of the riches finally convinced the Kings of England, Portugal and France to join forces for the first time to hunt pirates down and create the beginning of the end of the Golden Age of Piracy.

The Diamond Ship follows the true journey of this band of unruly pirates, in a story which until now has lain buried for three centuries in odd pieces of parchment and random scraps of marine diaries. With the exception of three fictional characters - a pirate gunner, a girl slave turned powder monkey, and a parrot, to help carry the story - the other characters, scenes, and even many of the conversations in this riveting tale really took place.

There's not a pirate fan out there of any age who won't be enthralled with this new feast of pirate knowledge. Find out what happened as this true story unfolds, plus learn a chest full of pirate sayings and hitherto little known pirate knowledge. Recommended for swashbuckling fans, but only those who dare be pirates themselves!

REALISTIC.

This story succeeds to reproduce life on the pirate ships of old. Thank you to the author and narrator Guy Barnes for a book worth it's own weight in pirate gold (diamonds I mean).

A great pirate adventure with real treasure to be had, I was pleasantly surprised as I started and got more into the book. Adrian Beckingham put together a great book for all ages. The narrating by Guy Barnes was spot on. Recommended for all.

Review by Mahalia, age 9

I read the original Diamond Ship six months ago. Recently I listened to Adrian Beckingham’s audiobook.
I enjoyed the pirate narration. I thought it was quite realistic. I am glad that Adrian included Shhhh, and Crossbones (the slave girl and her parrot). I also like how I got to learn things from the audiobook. Like that some slaves are happy to be boarded by pirates because the pirates might help them be free. Some would say that pirates aren’t all that bad, and that is sort of true. Pirates are brutal though. They kill without second thought as has been shown in the audiobook.
Hehehehehehar

JOLLY ROGER ME HEARTIES

We love this pirate adventure. Told in a very engaging storytelling style. Set sail to a new adventure also rich in genuine history and knowledge about true pirates. Even sail alongside the pirate who invented the Jolly Roger skull and crussbones flag!

A pirate tells his tale and kids would be wise to listen!

A tale of pirates and their adventures on the high seas. High jinks, mischief and humor are interwoven with historical facts and observations of the period. Perfect for boys or girls interested in history and adventure. Exotic and faraway places fire the imagination while real historical and geographical details make the story interesting and informative. The narrator’s accent, voice and style of speech is like a real live pirate spinning the yarn. The storytelling is amusing but easy to follow. Luckily there is plenty of comedic relief to bring levity to the otherwise harsh realities of pirate life. The main character is an intelligent, tuff and resourceful kid who would be easy for most young people to relate to. As a parent and educator I would recommend this audiobook for both boys or girls in the 7-10 age range.
