About this listen
Young farmer Kurt Dorn is torn between going to France to fight the Germans, or staying in America to be with the woman he loves and protect his wheat crop against saboteurs who question his loyalties. He struggles to come to terms with his deepest beliefs and his place in the world.
In this passionate tale, Zane Grey, one of America's most popular and enduring authors, captures the anxieties of the young country threatened by a foreign war and poised on the brink of a century of change.

To the Last Man is Zane Grey's archetypal tale of a bitter feud between two unforgiving factions: the ranchers led by Jean Isbel and, on the other side, Lee Jorth and his band of cattle rustlers. In the grip of a relentless code of loyalty to their own people, they fight the war of the Tonto Basin, desperately, doggedly, to the last man, neither side seeing the futility of it until it is too late.

Jack Hare, a tough, young cowboy, owes his life to August Naab, the stern but kind old settler who rescued him from sure death and offered him refuge. But Hare soon learns that Naab's Utah ranch is little more than an island paradise surrounded by a sea of danger. Hare must meet the challenge of a brazen gang of cattle thieves and of a corrupt rancher who attempts to steal Naab's water rights. But Hare faces even greater danger when he fights for the woman he loves: Mescal, the slender half-Navajo shepherdess who is already promised in marriage to Naab's firstborn son. Betty Zane strays from the usual Western tale, which usually has a man as the hero. Betty is brave and heroic, but never fear - there is a sweetheart to be reunited with in the end. Life along the Ohio River in frontier days is authentically depicted in this saga. The pioneer settlement of Fort Henry is the setting for the action involving traitors, Indian attacks, and a catastrophic fire.

Critic reviews
"Jim Gough is the perfect reader for this story....He dramatizes moments of romance and 'man's inhumanity to man' with his mellow style and baritone voice, which take the listener to a campfire where Westerners tell tall tales amid the beautiful Western landscape. Listeners young and old will enjoy Grey's way with words and Gough's relaxing cowboy drawl." (AudioFile)

Story
The warning was inscribed on the entrance of the hidden tomb, forgotten for millennia in the sands of mystic Egypt. Then the archaeologists and grave robbers came in search of the fabled Jewel of Seven Stars, which they found clutched in the hand of the mummy. Few heeded the ancient warning, until all who came in contact with the Jewel began to die in a mysterious and violent way, with the marks of a strangler around their neck.

Story
Termed the Uncle Tom's Cabin of the southwestern Indians and the first protest novel of California, Ramona is the story of 3 cultures - Indian, Mexican, and Anglo - locked in combat. The upheaval and injustice are humanized through the romance of a beautiful half-Indian orphan who grow up as the ward of Señora Moreno in privileged surroundings, then falls in love with an Indian and joins him in a life of poverty and tragedy. The Ramona Pageant in Hemet, California, based on this romance, has played each year since 1923, reenacting the transition period between Mexican traditions and the new U.S. and state governments.

Grigori Aleksandrovich Pechorin is an enigma: arrogant, cocky, melancholic, brave, cynic, romantic, loner, socialite, soldier, free soul, and yet, victim of the world, he eludes definition and remains a mystery to those who know him. Just who is he? And what does he hope to achieve? Evolving from first person to third person, and then into a diary, A Hero of Our Time takes on a variety of forms to interrogate Pechorin's cryptic character and his unusual philosophy, providing breathtaking descriptions of the Caucasus along the way.

One of Zane Grey’s Best
This is a great story and Jim Gough’s reading is great as well! This is also a hidden WWI book and tells of German infiltration into unions trying to destroy American wheat for the war... I guess we have been a divided nation for many decades, but thee American spirit prevailed.
