good book, skip the audio

the random bursts of song were obnoxious

however, good overview for someone who doesn't know the timeline of the civil war!

Historical fiction at its finest

Insightful, entertaining and educational for older elementary to adult. The narrator has a pleasant voice. Great book for homeschoolers studying the Civil War.

The beautifully strong language of this book brought us into the story.

This book subtly tackles some really important topics by telling a poignant story. Definitely worth reading, especially while studying US history.

Excellent book to reread right now

I had read this book back in 8th grade but thought now was an appropriate time to reread it with my own child. The reader did a wonderful job of making the voices animated for each of the characters and the music along with it was very appropriate and immersive to the storyline.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The South could have won using Cornstalks, cotton, and Sugarcane, but No, the North wanted to use muskets and cannons.

looking forward to sharing this

I wanted to preview this book before handing it off to my son. It had a wholesome quality like Farmer Boy but I really enjoyed how the Civil War battles were documented - via newspaper - which was distant enough to not be too intense for younger readers. Like any good historical fiction, the reader was immersed in the general feeling of the time and invested in individual storyline.
