Publisher's summary

"Have we really come so far, when a tour of the Continent is so desirable a thing? We've traded our swords for treaties, our daggers for promises - but our thirst for violence has never been quelled. And that's the crux of it - it can't be quelled. It's human nature."

For her 16th birthday, Vaela Sun receives the most coveted gift in all the Spire - a trip to the Continent. It seems an unlikely destination for a holiday: a cold, desolate land where two nations remain perpetually locked in combat. Most citizens lucky enough to tour the Continent do so to observe the spectacle and violence of battle, a thing long vanished in the peaceful realm of the Spire. For Vaela, the war holds little interest. As a talented apprentice cartographer and a descendant of the Continent herself, she sees the journey as a dream come true: a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve upon the maps she's drawn of this vast, frozen land.

But Vaela's dream all too quickly turns to nightmare as the journey brings her face-to-face with the brutal reality of a war she's only read about. Observing from the safety of a heli-plane, Vaela is forever changed by the sight of the bloody battle being waged far beneath her. And when a tragic accident leaves her stranded on the Continent, Vaela finds herself much closer to danger than she'd ever imagined - and with an entirely new perspective as to what war truly means. Starving, alone and lost in the middle of a war zone, Vaela must try to find a way home - but first, she must survive.

Good story

This was a good read

I like the way the story was written. It drew me in from the first few minutes. It told a good story that wasn’t too long. Just straight to the point. The characters were likable and well written for a book on the shorter side. It was like watching a really good mini series. I would highly recommend if you are in between listens and not sure what to read next. I enjoyed the story. The narrator was awesome. She has a great voice and read the story perfectly.

amazing!!

This is an amazingly written story. Keira draws you in and makes you feel for the characters. I found myself driving around longer than I needed to just to listen to the story longer! I can't wait for a second book and to see this amazing author continue her fanatic work!

Enjoyed

I enjoyed this story immensely. I understand how it can be perceived as having racial undertones but it clearly is about two well I suppose three fictional races of people. Fiona is a delight to listen to as always.

Fantastic Story!

All I can say is, I want more. Great worldbuilding, wonderful main character and that ending was brilliant. A must read.

Just not my type of book

This was technically a reread for me from the original arc that was rewritten. unfortunately the differences between the two weren't very obvious. This had potential but just seemed to drag on.

Better than expected.

Well the story was fairly predictable it was told in and engaging way. Fast-paced and exciting it was an easy listen. The narrator did an excellent job.

Horrible beyond belief

I gave up 3 or 4 hours in. Nothing much had happened other than snotty people talking--about the waring tribes they're watching from a plane, at dinner, about nothing. And then the narration in a high-pitched English action (especially for the men) was physically painful to my ears.
