About this listen

Lily Armitage never intended to return to Endgame House—the grand family home where her mother died twenty-one Christmases ago—until she receives a letter from her aunt, asking her to return to take part in an annual tradition: the Christmas Game. The challenge? Solve twelve clues to find twelve keys. The prize? The deeds to the manor house.

Lily has no desire to win the house. But her aunt makes one more promise: The clues will also reveal who really killed Lily's mother all those years ago. So for the twelve days of Christmas Lily must stay at Endgame House with her estranged cousins and unravel the riddles that hold the key not just to the family home but to its darkest secrets.

However, it soon becomes clear that her cousins all have their own reasons for wanting to win the house—and not all of them are playing fair. As a snowstorm cuts them off from the village, the game turns deadly. Soon Lily realizes she's no longer fighting for an inheritance, but for her life.

I loved the thought of an old house in the countryside at Christmas, the winter snow. I so enjoyed the twist and turns of the plot, the maze of what’s to come. Excited to return to the book every chance I got! The English/British accent makes it even better! I would love to see a movie!

I enjoyed imagining Endgame house/manor! I loved the thought of the snow on the country landscape of Yorkshire.

Book was well written but just not for me very slow I hate guessing. A friend recommended it and finally I finished it before this Christmas lol I missed it last year!

Not for me

This is what I would call a cozy listen. To be honest I didn’t like Sarra. I would have told her to piss if the first time she was nasty to me then demanded help. It was entertaining, I didn’t think it would be as predictable as it was. But I enjoyed it once they got to the house. The very beginning nearly list me and I was going to move on to my next read. But I’m glad I didn’t. This is a book that would make a great fun movie.

The story started out a bit slow but boy did it end with a BOOM! It was so intense and I was somewhat right about the killer. But this will never let you look at family and family at Christmas time the same ever again!

The story was well-written and narrated with beautifully detailed clues. It was a genuine pleasure to survive with Lily until the end of end game.

Good Twist

The book is good and entertaining. Think Agatha Christie with a dash of wokeness. This equals a modern fun mystery that will keep the listener guessing. My previous review only had a problem with the recording itself, but they have added back the two chapters that they inadvertently left out.

Even Ebenezer Scrooge could not have Bah Humbugged this clever mystery gift wrapped in poetic prose. Alexandra Benedict chooses her words as artfully as a composer chooses her notes which sets an eerie yet cozy mood for a modern gothic game of mysteries that turn to murders most foul.

Ana Clements soothing voice lulls the reader into believing this story is only about solving a cold case murder until the bodies begin to stack up and leading our protagonist into a ruthless game of survival.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end and will add this to my annual Christmas collection. It deserves to be read and re-read.

Suspenseful! The ending is satisfying but a bit too abrupt. Still, perfect who folks that love a good Christmas mystery or mysteries in general. The narrator is excellent
