"The winning combination of George Newbern's engaging narration and Rick Atkinson's vivid new work of history - the first in a planned trilogy about the American Revolution - brings to life what could have been a dry account of Revolutionary battles." (AudioFile Magazine)

From the best-selling author of the Liberation Trilogy comes the extraordinary first volume of his new trilogy about the American Revolution.

Rick Atkinson, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning An Army at Dawn and two other superb books about World War II, has long been admired for his deeply researched, stunningly vivid narrative histories. Now, he turns his attention to a new war, and in the initial volume of the Revolution Trilogy, he recounts the first 21 months of America’s violent war for independence. From the battles at Lexington and Concord in spring 1775 to those at Trenton and Princeton in winter 1777, American militiamen and then the ragged Continental Army take on the world’s most formidable fighting force.

It is a gripping saga alive with astonishing characters: Henry Knox, the former bookseller with an uncanny understanding of artillery; Nathanael Greene, the blue-eyed bumpkin who becomes a brilliant battle captain; Benjamin Franklin, the self-made man who proves to be the wiliest of diplomats; George Washington, the commander in chief who learns the difficult art of leadership when the war seems all but lost. The story is also told from the British perspective, making the mortal conflict between the redcoats and the rebels all the more compelling.

Full of riveting details and untold stories, The British Are Coming is a tale of heroes and knaves, of sacrifice and blunder, of redemption and profound suffering. Rick Atkinson has given stirring new life to the first act of our country’s creation drama.

Although I’m a history major and knew much about the American Revolution, this tome revealed so much more and brought you into the story as if you lived it.

I can not wait for the next volume in the series.

Great Story

This is a history of the first couple years of the American Revolution, and it's studded with eye-opening details (new to me). The book is oriented towards military developments of the Revolution, and with the experiences of individual soldiers, both high-ranking and low. There is very little about material about the socio-political angles or home-front experience of the Revolution. Refreshingly, it treat both American and British experiences. It is informative and worthwhile- however, I felt it was marred by the narrator's style. Newbern used a sing-song voice that seemed unsuited to much of the (often downbeat) content. I also found my attention wandering, in spite of the value of the material. A different style would have held my mind more completely

History of the Revolution Flawed by Narration

What I expected

I have listened to several books on the American Revolution, but not one has talked about the British side of their problems/calamities. I found this book so thorough and enlightening that I can hardly wait for Book 2 to come out. I truly hadn't heard several of the stories on the British side for sure, but I even heard of new things on the American side. You will not waste your credit on this book! The narrator was outstanding, the history riveting and I have a much better understanding of both sides of the story now.

I wish I could give more stars than just 5!

The reader is good overall, but butchers a few words like... pusillanimity / Culloden /cheval de frise... and some others. Otherwise / perfect.

I enjoyed it so much I purchased two hard cover copies and shared with friends. I highly recommend it and eagerly await volume two.

One of his many factoids that I found quite interesting was his comments on a self-educated man who retired fabulously wealthy at 42, wanting to be remembered not for his wealth but the many good things he hoped to do for humanity. And included among his goals was the expansion of vaccinations to prevent the ravages of disease - in this case smallpox - a virus that killed as many as 30%. Unlike others that followed Benjamin Franklin with similar ideas, Franklin was not plagued with conspiracy theorists who thought he was attempting to implant tracking devices, and Franklin is deservedly remembered for the great things he did.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this volume and it gave me a while new perspective on this, our first civil war.

Excellent Book

What the book “Battle Cry of Freedom” by James McPherson did to explain the causes and events on both sides of the American Civil War, “The British are Coming” by Rick Atkins unfolds what was the British ‘Colonial Civil War’ in North America. A very scholarly yet entertaining anecdotal description of events on both sides of the Atlantic from far flung places such as the Portsmouth England ship yards to Boston, New York and Wilmington North Carolina in the beginning years of the conflict that came to be called the American Revolution. I very much look forward to the next installment.

Even though I've finished this book, I'm keeping it to listen to again. It's an amazing book about the American Revolution.
