everything about it is just plain fun

I have read the print copy of this book before and it was utter brilliance in a novella so I couldn’t resist picking up the audio when I realised it existed – was it possible to improve on something that was already that good?

Yes. Yes it was.

Evan Harris keeps the pace rolling for this action-packed story of a spoilt little Bridezilla’s wedding day gone horribly awry. The author has essentially designed a beautiful wedding, down to napkin rings, and thrown zombies at it for our enjoyment. There’s none of the usual ‘but zombies aren’t real! This can’t be happening!’ crap, the misfits of the wedding party grab some power tools and set about surviving the zompocalypse.

The main character, Kat, has seen enough horror films in her time to know exactly what’s going on when one of the groomsmen starts spewing his vital organs then chomping on the wedding guests. Being the sarcastic, cynical badass that she is, she takes control of the situation and rounds up the survivors to get them out alive.

This was highly entertaining in print, but what the audio version brings to the table is the hilarious valley girl voices for the sorority sister bridesmaids and the ‘bro’ voice for the frat boy groomsmen. The characters are even funnier in this version, which is saying something.
I’m not sure how I’d get on with Evan Harris’ work for more serious subject matter, but I’d definitely be interested in hearing more of his humorous and dramatic work. This audiobook was the best possible marriage (pun absolutely intended) between narrator and story.

The beauty of this book is that you get the feeling that the author had a great time writing this book, everything about it is just plain fun which makes it a delight to listen to.

I would highly recommend this audiobook for fans of zombie literature, gratuitous gore and humour. At 1 hour 44 minutes, it’s the perfect listen for a short road trip or during work breaks. I personally found it to be the perfect palette cleanser after listening to a difficult 10 hour audio which didn’t really do anything for me.
