About this listen

The Book of Pride captures the true story of the gay rights movement from the 1960s to the present, through richly detailed, stunning interviews with the leaders, activists, and ordinary people who witnessed the movement and made it happen. These individuals fought battles both personal and political, often without the support of family or friends, frequently under the threat of violence and persecution.

By shining a light on these remarkable stories of bravery and determination, The Book of Pride not only honors an important chapter in American history, but also empowers young people today (both LGBTQ and straight) to discover their own courage in order to create positive change. Furthermore, it serves a critically important role in ensuring the history of the LGBTQ movement can never be erased, inspiring us to resist all forms of oppression with ferocity, community, and most importantly, pride.

Everyday Heroes

What an incredible book, and so we’ll performed. Everyday lives, real people who fought, won, loved, and persevered.

Inspiring. Maddening too, because why? Why did any of them have to fight this hard?

Fabulous view into the history of LGBTQIA people

The stories were personal, engaging, and a window into those that helped shape our present world.

Important LGBTQ+ Stories, Past and Present

This is a very well-organized audiobook. It's obvious much care and thought went into its compilation. Each shared story begins with an introduction to the important person, then moves into that person's story in his/her/their own words, and ends with a "you are there"-sort of description of the interview location, told in brief but immersive and relatable detail.

My only audiobook presentation issue is after a while it becomes obvious the stories are being performed by AI rather than the original storytellers--not because of poor or unrealistic performance, but because of repeated voices for different people. Please note that this is minutiae as far as something I consider worth criticizing. I only mention it in my review because I know there are those for whom this would necessitate reading the hard copy.

I highly recommend this book to everyone--even those who are not members of the LGBTQ+ community. It would make an excellent read for a college course in human relations, current events, anthropology, and almost any other cultural study. It does have some language in it, so I recommend pre-reading before having kids under 14 read it.

Inspiring

I found this book uplifting and quite moving. The stories give important insights into the struggles, the hopes, the commitments, and achievements of the LGBTQIA+ community. These stories also serve as lessons of continuing to fight to good fight for rights and equality for all in these times of hateful attacks by the right wing. The message is Stay Strong and Keep on Keeping on.

History is important

We should never forget what our community did prior to the 90s to get the rights that some to most of us enjoy and laid the ground work to continue the fight. Making sure that no one puts our community back into the closet. It has helped me to realize we still need to heal our community and not exclude its members.
